His Kids in Action

Around this time last year, the Center for Humanitarian Engagement (CHE) at Walla Walla University partnered with His Kids in Action (HKIA), a student-led service club, to throw a year-end celebration for children around the Walla Walla Valley at Washington Park. While we were looking forward to running the program again this year, our plans were thwarted by the COVID-19 coronavirus.
Due to the pandemic, we have had to be flexible with our plans. With the help of some creativity and Lindsey Schumacher, a CHE Ambassador, an online program has been established and has been taking place in lieu of its physical occurrence at the park.

Having started online meetups, delivering packages with crafts, and the telling of fun stories to the kids in Walla Walla weekly, success has already been experienced. "Delivering packets to the children has opened my eyes to how impactful HKIA is in our community,” says Darius Felder, Co-director of HKIA.

“The kids really get excited when I arrive not because of what I am going to give them, but because of their genuine excitement of the personable interaction that our programs provide. They look forward to us being there to spend the time with them and it really makes me feel loved and valued! Although I am giving gifts to children, I am receiving a major gift in return as well.”

Although HKIA has a long history, I believe we are just starting to experience the beginning of how influential this program can be to our global community. If you have an interest in helping write stories, developing crafts, or just want to help by being a mentor, please reach out and let us know.

Sincerely,

E. David Lopez
