Update from the Board

Dear Ubuntu'ers,

Let me start this January newsletter off by wishing you a very happy New Year! I hope all of you were able to get some rest during the Christmas break, and especially for the internationals among us, that you were able to see your family, friends or other loved ones back home. Even the Ubuntu board took a little time off between Christmas and NYE so we can start the new year off fresh and well-rested! While there was an unfortunate incident concerning our Christmas Stockings, our first monthly drinks of 2017 was a great success! For the second semester, we're already planning some really great events, starting of course this month with our annual Meet the Masters! So I hope you're as excited as we are to get the work going again and we look forward to seeing you all soon!

On behalf of the board,

Lisanne Veldt

President of CS Ubuntu

Upcoming CS Ubuntu Events

17 January, Meet the Masters

Interested in a conflict related masters program but lost on which one to choose? At our Meet the Masters event, students from several conflict related masters will share their experiences and tips on how to get in. You'll be able to compare the following master programs: Conflict Studies and Human Rights (UU), Conflict Resolution and Governance (UvA), Conflict, Territories and Identities (RU), International Public Law (UU) and Military History (UvA). This event will give you a unique opportunity to hear from the students themselves which will help you to prepare early on! Plus there will of course be some drinks and snacks to enjoy! This event is free for members and €3,- for non-members. For more information check our Facebook event

16 February, General Assembly

Do you want to know what's happening behind the scenes or do you want to vote on important CS Ubuntu matters? Then this is your chance! At this year's first General Assembly you'll get the chance to let your voice be heard and to check how your favorite board and committees are doing. We'll give you an update on future plans, present our budget and as always have some food and drinks. Last but not least, we'll give you a first glance at possibilities for a board year of your own. So don't miss this!

A Recap Of Last Month's events
10 December, AISU Writing Marathon

On the 10th of December, Human Rights Day, Ubuntu, together with Amnesty International Student Group Utrecht, organized the yearly Amnesty Writing Marathon. In the ColourKitchen we worked hard to write letters to several different authorities, for example President Obama and the high court of Turkey, to request to make a change in the situation of people who are wrongly incarcerated for political reasons, such as Edward Snowden. We also wrote letters directly to the people we are fighting for to give them some support in their hour of need and to let them know the world has not forgotten them. It was a great success, a lot of people showed up, and together we wrote about 500 letters! We hope that this action will make a positive change in the situation of these political prisoners, no matter how small it might be.
23 December, Christmas stockings

To show our beloved members some Ubuntu generosity we decided to do our very own Christmas Stockings event. Many of you put up their socks but when we came back after Christmas to fill them with presents we were sad to discover most of them were stolen. However, we didn't want this to ruin our Christmas spirit so we bought everyone that hung up their socks a new pair and still filled them with a special suprise. To get your presents, please contact and we'll find a way to get your brand new socks to you!
11 January, Monthly Drinks

Our first event of 2017 and we had a great time! Just like all of our Monthly Drinks we laughed a lot and drank more. It was great hearing about what everyone did during the Christmas break and hearing all the great stories of New Year's eve. Come join us at our next Monthly Drinks 8 February as always at Café de Stadsgenoot!
