Update from the Board

Dear members,

October may have seemed like a quiet month, yet behind the scenes, the association was rumbling. Not only did the first General Assembly of the year take place, the first committee organised event is also behind us! Scroll down to read recaps of these two successful events.  We’re looking forward to what November has to bring! Scroll down to see the upcoming events.
Last week, our board room was closed due to the ‘reflection week’. This week the board room will again be available . If you haven’t had the chance yet, feel free to swing by and discover it for yourself! (Drift 21, room 2.06)
As a final note, we wish everyone an excellent start of the second block!

Best wishes,

on behalf of the board,

Anouk Pietersen

CS Ubuntu President 2017-2018

Upcoming CS Ubuntu Events

20 November: Lecture - Dutch Mission in Mali

Dear CS Ubuntu members, on behalf of the Lecture Committee, it is our pleasure to invite you to our first lecture of the year! The topic is the UN Dutch Mission in Mali, which has been ongoing since 2014 through the involvement of The Netherlands in the United Nations’ Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). The main contributions of the Dutch military have been, inter alia, long-range reconnaissance personnel, intelligence personnel and police training. Given the recent developments’ controversial nature, namely, the shocking deaths of the two Dutch servicemen and the serious injury of one in a training exercise in Mali; and the fact that as far as it is known, the Dutch military will continue to contribute to this cause by the end of 2018, makes this a very relevant topic for discussion. The speakers and the programme will be released at different stages throughout the weeks leading up to the event. So make sure you keep up with our Facebook posts!
-Our first speaker has been already announced, and it will be Lieutenant Colonel Léon Jacobs. He has been deployed as UN Military Staff Officer and Senior Planner in the MINUSMA Force Headquarters.
He had the responsibility of supporting the DDR (Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration) process and, furthermore, has been involved in the UN Force Generation and improvement of a Comprehensive Approach in the UN Mission. For further info, check out our Facebook post!

A Recap of Last Month's Events

24 October: General Assembly

On Tuesday the 24th of October CS Ubuntu had its first General Assembly (GA) of the year. For those wondering what a GA entails: GA’s are open to all CS Ubuntu members and is the golden opportunity to see what the new board has been up to, meet the different committees, get a sneak peak of all upcoming activities, as well as decide on important matters within the association.

During this GA, the board presented their policies and budget for the upcoming year. Also, we discussed several adjustments to the Regulations of Order and received valuable input from members. The committees introduced themselves and presented promising upcoming events. Afterwards, a few of us made it to drinks, which again led to a late night for those present.
The next GA will be held in March!

1 November: Pub Quiz!

On November 1st, the Activities Committee hosted their first event: a Pub Quiz & monthly drinks at De Stadsgenoot. The teams, consisting of members and non-members, “Dutchies” and internationals, competed against each other and answered many challenging and fun questions in five categories: Popular Culture, Nature, Conflict, Utrecht and “Fun”. We also had picture and music rounds, which were a nice variation to the regular questions. There was one question every team got right: “What is CS Ubuntu’s coolest committee?” Can you guess the answer? ;) After the announcement of the winning team, we continued with our monthly drinks.
Thanks to everyone who participated, it was great fun!
