Update from the Board

Dear Ubuntu'ers,

The academic year is starting again and with that we have a lot to look forward to within Ubuntu! While most of you have (hopefully) had a relaxing summer, we as the board have been working hard to prepare yet another great Ubuntu year. And not without result: We finally have our own board room at the university! You can come and find us at Drift 21 room 2.06 at tuesdays, wednesdays and fridays. Furthermore, I was lucky enough to represent CS Ubuntu at the Human Rights reception which was part of the AHRI conference. This is a three day conference concerning human rights research which took place in Utrecht this year. Also, we had a great kick-off at the orientation day for international students where a lot of new members signed up! To sum up, we had an exciting start as the new board and more is yet to come, so stay tuned.

For the upcoming month, we prepared some great activities (see calendar) and we definitely hope to see all of the new and old faces there!

On behalf of the board,

Lisanne Veldt
President of CS Ubuntu

Upcoming CS Ubuntu Events

13 September from 9 pm, Kick off event: Drinks and Fun!
Interested in CS Ubuntu? Or wanting to meet all your fellow CS Ubuntu members for the upcoming year?  On the 13th of September we will kick off the new academic year with a night of drinks and fun at Café De Stadsgenoot! You will get to enjoy a nice drink and you will meet the old as well as the new members of Ubuntu. De Stadsgenoot, as always, will be our home base this year. It is a lovely bar around the corner from the University library. See the Facebook event for more information.
21 September from 7 pm, International Food Evening
CS Ubuntu consists of people from all kinds of nationalities and cultures. We love that fact! And to make use of such a wonderful circumstance, we present you with an international food evening. We ask everybody to bring their own (favorite) food and enjoy a lovely evening of sharing food and happiness. For more information, keep an eye out on our Facebook pages, we will of course keep you updated on the specifics of this event!
26 September Movie Night! (time and location to be announced)!
Images can sometimes tell a story better than words. At the end of this month we will bring you a documentary that you will not easily forget. Of course the subject of this documentary will relate to conflict studies and general interests in global issues. Time, date and location are still to be announced, but know this will be as relaxed as well intellectually valuable evening. We will keep you posted!
29 September Pub Crawl (Time and location to be announced)
After a first month of intensive studying it is of course necessary to let go of possible worries or stress a little bit. On the 29th of September CS Ubuntu will therefore take a group of lovely members to paint the town red. A list of very nice bars has been selected, and we will of course visit each of them. If you ever wondered what CS Ubuntu (board) members look like drunk, please come and join us on this flamboyant evening. More info will follow!

In the Spotlight

This month’s In the Spotlight features… De Stadsgenoot!

This month’s “in the Spotlight” features …. Café De Stadsgenoot. This year, CS Ubuntu will be, once again, using this lovely café as its regular pub for the monthly drinks and additional events. De Stadsgenoot is run by Wilfred de Jager, who is a successful entrepreneur and very nice person. The café has a very warm and friendly atmosphere, and Ubuntu members are always welcomed with open arms. Its great location, near the University Library, and its nice personnel make for a great save-haven for our study association. All the more reason to put this café in the spotlight this month. We will visit this place throughout the year, and we hope to see you there as well! For more information on this awesome place check the Facebook page of De Stadsgenoot.

Internship Ubuntuhuis Utrecht

“Ubuntuhuis is a small organisation based on solidarity with people who have been or are still homeless, living in poverty or without a legal status. People who experience these situations themselves work together at the Ubuntuhuis in different languages. Several days a week we organise meals, Dutch lessons, a vegetable garden, being together, theatergroup, sports, etc. We try to support people in their contact with institutions and professionals, sometimes difficult, but with the aim to improve their personal lives and collective situation as well.

If you’re looking for practical experience with social media and fundraising, if you’re interested in helping to develop an ambitious yet feasible plan, if you’re enthusiastic by the idea of working at a local organization, and if you have about 4 hours a week during 9-12 months, Ubunthuis is interested in meeting you! Please contact them if you are interested at or if you want more information.

Internationale spectator: The European Parliaments

Andrea Finesso’s article: The European Parliaments won the First Prize in the essay competition organized by the Dutch Senate and House of Representatives in the context of the parliamentary dimension of the Netherlands’ EU Presidency (January – June 2016). The participants were asked to answer the following question: “What role will the Dutch parliament play in the European Union 25 years from now?” Andrea Finesso has addressed this issue from a broader perspective, as testified in one of the opening sentences of his essay: “…. facing a Union characterized by an ever closer-ness, and being myself not Dutch, the essay will focus more broadly on the role and position of European national parliaments in the EU, and their cooperation and interaction for the democratization of the EU”. Heads Up: We have our own room!!

Since 25 August, after a few weeks of lobbying by our president we now have our own ROOM! Well not completely our own room seen as we share it with Dare to be Grey, but still! It's not big and it doesn't look very good yet but we're going to do our best to make something out of it! We will keep you up to date on it and we hope to see all there in a few weeks!
