Update from the Board

Dear members,

With the first month of 2018 behind us, it is with great pleasure (and a bit of pride) that I can predict that 2018 will be a good year for CS Ubuntu. During the UU International Orientation Day, the board had a wonderful time meeting some enthusiastic new members and committee members, and we would like to welcome you! Whether you have been a member of CS Ubuntu for some time or have just recently joined us (welcome!), this newsletter will update you on the many exciting developments starting this month.

First of all, as usual, in this newsletter, you will find an abundance of events and activities, as well as recaps from the first events of the second semester in case you weren't able to attend.

Also, you can now get your CS Ubuntu sweater! Join the hype, get warm in these wintertimes and show some love to your favorite study association!
Ordering is simple: Fill in the order form, transfer 20 euros, and your sweater will be ready for pickup at the CS Ubuntu boardroom (Drift 21, 2.06)! Order deadline is February 18th. Order form: https://goo.gl/forms/noZPozKgycjPiZkA3

Furthermore, CS Ubuntu is expanding and updating its professional dimension. It is now possible to join the CS Ubuntu LinkedIn group. Although this group is in its early stages, it will help you orient relevant organizations, check interesting internship and job offerings, and let you keep in touch with fellow members as we progress into the professional arena. Additionally, CS Ubuntu is updating its alumni database. Would you like to be a part of this alumni network? I'd love to hear from you, please send me a message (president.csubuntu@gmail.com

In short, we are confident about the second semester. Hope to run into you soon at an activity or in the boardroom!

On behalf of the board,

Best wishes,
Anouk Pietersen
CS Ubuntu President 2017-2018

PS. The next General Assembly is on the 21st of February. Curious to find out how our association works, and want to know how things are going behind the screen? Definitely stop by! More information below.

26 February: Documentary Screening: In Search of Better Days

More than two decades have passed since the dissolution of Yugoslavia shook the Balkan peninsula and left its imprint on history today. The Balkan War has come to an end but tension still looms in the region. This event will focus more specifically on Bosnia and Herzegovina and its history following that period.

CS Ubuntu will present a screening of the documentary titled "In Search of Better Days" created by Wijnand Slurink, which tells the story of young Bosnians today: "Twenty years after the war the future still isn’t that bright for them. They struggle with unemployment and a lack of study opportunities. The country is poisoned by corruption and nationalism, but no one seems to have the solution for these problems. Should they stay, or leave to a country where there are more opportunities?"

During this event, both documentary makers will be present for questions and discussion!

The event will take place on Monday, the 26th of February at 19:15 PM and walk-in will begin at 19:00. The location is Drift 25, room 0.02. Entrance is open to all, free for CS Ubuntu members and 3 euros for non-members.

Please register to save yourself a seat as spots are limited:https://goo.gl/forms/qh6cpLIhK8ZVarHG2

A Recap of Last Month's Events

5 February: Lecture with Red Cross Students Desk: Human Rights in Times of Conflict

Last Monday, the long-awaited lecture Human Rights in Times of Conflict took place. With no snowstorm to stop us this time, Jos Soliman took the audience away with his knowledge on humanitarian law both in theory and practice, whereas Belinda van der Gaag shared her experiences regarding the case of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, and how the Red Cross operates in these situations.

It was an interesting and intimate lecture, in which the audience gained new insights in the difficulties of upholding the humanitarian law in violent conflicts and how this affects the residing people. A special thanks to the speakers and to the Red Cross Student Desk, with whom we worked together. The insights and defiant statements sparked a fascinating debate and left us all with intriguing food for thought at the end of the night.
