Update from the Board

Dear Ubuntu-members,

The new board has been officially appointed and therefore, this is the first time I will be writing the ‘Update from the Board’. It feels both weird and exciting to take over the responsibilities of this year’s board, since they’ve done such a great job! But before we go all sentimental, let’s look back on some activities this last, busy month.

Some of us walked a second edition of the Night of the Refugee, a sponsor walk to raise money for humanitarian help for refugees. This year, they even walked 40k! Then, to round up the year, we had the Summer General Assembly. Besides the administrative round-ups, we looked back on this second semester, with all its successes and things to learn from. And, last but not least, we appointed the new board! Which is where I come in. Eloy (secretary), Max (treasurer), Roderik (external affairs officer) and I, Lisanne (president), will be the faces of next year’s board!

To thank this year’s board, we also organized a Summer BBQ – which later turned into Summer Drinks because of the bad weather forecasts. While, in the end, we had perfect BBQ-weather, we still had a great night with food at Eloy’s, drinks at Café de Stadsgenoot and some thank-you gifts for the leaving board. Sam, Jana and Emmalien did a great job this year and we’re going to try hard to continue what they started. We’re already preparing for another great Ubuntu year starting September but for now I want to wish you happy holidays, safe travels and two stress-free months!

Hope to see you next year!

Upcoming CS Ubuntu Events

Since the summer holidays have now started and the academic year has ended, there will not be any CS Ubuntu activities until September. Keep an eye out for our September newsletter to see what we have in store for you next year!

Other Interesting Activities

18 June - 30 September, The Art of Banksy, Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam

Looking for an activity this summer that is both fun and interesting? In the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam, a collection of the works of street artist Banksy is being exhibited throughout the summer. ‘The Art of Banksy’ consists of key artworks that mark the prolific street artist’s colorful climb to fame. Original canvasses, paintings, sculptures and interactive storytelling lets you experience poignant periods of Banksy’s career. For more info and tickets, click here.

28 July - 25 August, Humanity House Open Air Cinema 2016, Humanity House, The Hague

Humanity House's cozy backyard opens this summer to give you cinematographic insights in people on the move. Beautiful, frightful, harsh or happy: what do the lives of people look like after they've made the big decision to go elsewhere? How do they relate to the new and unfamiliar environment – and to the policies that are often trying to stop them? Take your chance to visit Humanity House’s open air film screenings in The Hague and open your mind to migration in all its forms. To check out the films screening this summer, check the website.

9 - 10 September, Nacht van de Dictatuur, The Hague, Amsterdam and Rotterdam

In the Spotlight

This month’s In the Spotlight features… newly opened restaurant SYR!

The concept of restaurant SYR was set up by GYS Foundation, which you might know from the other restaurants with the same name that have been opened earlier. All the construction work prior to the restaurant’s opening has been done by volunteers, both of Syrian and Dutch backgrounds. The opening of SYR on 25 June was a festive one, with a parade through the streets of Utrecht.

Current Work
SYR serves Syrian/Middle-Eastern food with a European twist with great vegetarian options as well. This makes a great bond which is also shown in the Syrian and Dutch staff. Profits made the first year will be donated to Foundation of Refugee Students UAF so you’ll have amazing food and you’ll be helping refugees.

Besides a website, SYR also has a blog in which they tell about their staff and the stories behind SYR. You can read them here.

Did this story make you hungry? Check out SYR’s website for even more info, reservations and more!

Food for Thought

Scriptieprijzen 2016

TEDTalks: To Solve Mass Violence, Look to Locals
Severine Autesserre studies the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is in the middle of the deadliest conflict since World War II; it's been called "the largest ongoing humanitarian crisis in the world.” The conflict seems hopelessly, insolvably large. But her insight from decades of listening and engaging: The conflicts are often locally based. And instead of focusing on solutions that scale to a national level, leaders and aid groups might be better served solving local crises before they ignite. Click here to watch her speech on TEDTalks.

Heads Up
Due to the summer break the new board will be enjoying the sun in foreign lands and maybe, just maybe, also here in the Netherlands (fingers crossed). We will be back end of August for the new year and we hope we will see you all there for our introductory events and our monthly drinks. Have an amazing summer and enjoy being free!
