Update from the Board

Dear members,

While we're already finishing up the 3rd block of this academic year, a lot has been going on within CS Ubuntu. The Study Trip Committee is working hard to finish it's awesome program for Cyprus while the Activities Committee just organized a very successfull International Food Eve + Pub Quiz (shout out to the winning team!) and is currently working on some big events in May and June. Great to see our committee members work their socks off to make the last months of this Ubuntu year so awesome! Btw, if you'd like contribute to CS Ubuntu in a small, but still very helpful, way, read our piece below on how you can help us create a cozy Ubuntu hangout. Also, since I know some of our lovely members applied for the MA Conflict Studies and Human Rights I'd like to wish everyone good luck! Would be great to have an Ubuntu delegation in the selection next year. Then, last but not least, something to keep an eye out for: The application period for the CS Ubuntu board for next year is almost starting! So keep checking our Facebook page and your inbox because more info will follow very shortly!

On behalf of the board,

Lisanne Veldt
President of CS Ubuntu

05 April, Monthly drinks

Café de Stadsgenoot at 21:00

As per tradition, we will be having our monthly drinks Wednesday the 5th of April - join us at Cafe De Stadsgenoot from 9 PM onwards for an evening of beer, catching up, and some well-deserved relaxation! If you've never been before but are interested don't hessitate to come, you're always welcome! If you'd like to bring a friend that would, of course, be fine too as our monthly drinks are always open to everyone. For the Facebook event click here

06 April, Excursion to the embassy of Cyprus

The Hague at 16:00

Coming Thursday CS Ubuntu is going to the embassy of Cyprus to get a briefing. This will all be about what happened in Cyprus that caused the divide there still is today. This event is exclusively for the people who are coming on the trip to Cyprus with us however we do have a few spots open if you want to join us to the Hague! If you're interested please email to studytrip.csubuntu@gmail.com, we will need your ID number as well (for safety reasons). The deadline for joining is this Wednesday. After this briefing we will get dinner before heading towards Humanity House for an event with paintings of school children from Cyprus about the concept of “Home” which relates to the political problem. We are looking forward to this excursion and think it will be a great way to prepare for our study trip to Cyprus!

16-23 April, CS Ubuntu goes to Cyprus!

Cyprus!!

As many of you may already know, this year's study trip will go to Cyprus. Here we will learn more about the conflict that occurred which split the country in half. We will reside in Larnaca in the 'Greek' part of Cyprus. Here we will dive into the culture of Cyprus, visiting Larnaca castle, the Byzantine church and one the of the most important mosques in the world! There is also a beautiful salt lake nearby and with any luck we will be able to spot some flamingos! We will also be visiting Nicosia a few times. Nicosia (or Lefcosia) is the capital and is the last divided capital of Europe. The city is divided in a 'Greek' and 'Turkish' part and we hope to see both sides. The trip will be educational but hopefully also relaxing as we will have some time to visit the amazing beaches of Cyprus and hopefully enjoy the warmth of the Mediterranean sun! We are getting more and more excited and cannot wait to go!  See our next newsletter for some pictures of the trip!

25 April, Official boardroom bonanza!

Boardroom, Drift 21 room 206

After the long and arduous task of cleaning up and furnishing the board room, we are officially opening it for members of the study organisation starting the 25th of April! We are open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11:00 until 16:00 so come on by and have a chat with the board or your fellow members! If you feel like contributing, we are always looking for ways to maximize the coziness of the room, so if you have a lamp or a poster or whatever that you're not using anymore, consider donating it for future Ubuntu generations! We hope to see you all there!

A Recap Of Last Month's event

22 March, Food Eve & Pub Quiz

On March 22, we had a food night and pub quiz in one, at De Stadsgenoot. And it was great! Many of you showed up, as well as many non-members, to enjoy some great food from all over the world. From Asian-style pork and Syrian tabbouleh to Dutch pancakes and tompoezen: there were so many choices! After we were done eating, teams were made and the pub quiz began, with questions in five categories: The Netherlands and Utrecht, Movies, Conflict, Pictures and Music. The outcome was very exciting, as there was a tie between two teams, but after a final question Team Yalla Yalla proved themselves to be the winners, and won a round of beers. That marked the end of the pub quiz, and the beginning of some fun drinks together. All in all, it was a great night!
