February Newsletter

The image above was taken on the second day of Dhaulagiri Circuit trek in Nepal. This is one of my favourite views in Nepal as incorporates Himalayan vistas in the distance set among green terraced fields and traditional villages in the foreground.

Our Dhaulagiri Circuit trek in April/ May led by Almas Khan is now guaranteed and there is currently availability so please get in touch soon if you would like to join this group.

Since our New Year newsletter was emailed out in early January we have had a busy six weeks with lots of enquiries and bookings. As you can see from the list to left of this email most of our Western led treks in 2015 are now guaranteed to run. These groups are starting to fill so I suggest getting in contact with us soon if you are planning to visit Nepal, India or Bhutan this year.

Please click here for the complete list of both Western and Sherpa led treks now guaranteed to run in 2015 and 2016 published on TMC website

International flights to Kathmandu are at their cheapest level for many years, I recently purchased my flights for Spring season with Turkish Airlines for GBP480 from London to Kathmandu return. This is a real bargain and several hundred pounds cheaper than usual therefore 2015 would be a great time to plan a visit to the Himalaya!

We also have several treks in 2015 that are "nearly guaranteed" and only require one or two more people to sign up before we confirm the departure. Jill Lawson is leading our Ama Dablam Base Camp trek in late October. Jill led this trek in 2014 and the group had a wonderful trek with very positive feedback. This trip would be a good objective for those of you looking for an introductory trek in the Himalaya.

In Autumn season we are excited to offer a new trek from Naar to Upper Mustang GHT in late October. Tom Lawson will lead this remote trek travelling through Damodar Himal and crossing over Teri La pass into Mustang. This trail is rarely trekked and would be a good objective if you are looking for a remote camping trek in Nepal.

I will be in UK until March 11th when I fly out to Nepal for our Spring season, please give me a call before then if you would like to discuss a trip to the Himalaya. Our telephone number is +44 (0) 207 0187031.

Trek on!

Weather forecasts for our Himalayan treks

The Mountain Company has recently made an agreement with EverestWeather.com (West Coast Weather, LLC) to provide professional weather forecasts for our Himalayan treks and expeditions throughout the Spring and Autumn seasons in 2015.

At The Mountain Company we have always taken the safety of our groups very seriously. We believe that by investing in weather forecasts like those provided by EverestWeather.com, this will further reduce the overall risk of our groups trekking in the Himalaya. It will also increase your chances of successfully completing your objective as we can plan the itinerary around any major storms.

For more information please read article on TMC blog "Weather forecasts for our Himalayan treks and expeditions during 2015"

Top book recommendation

In each newsletter we select and review one of our favourite books and for our February newsletter our choice is Runner: A short story about a long run by Lizzy Hawker. This book has not yet been published however Amazon is taking pre orders for its release in early April.

I know this books will be a fantastic read about Lizzy's life in the world of ultra running including recounting her mail runs from Everest Base Camp to Kathmandu and winning the woman's title for Ultramarathon Tour of Mont Blanc. As Amazon explains this book will describe her motivation is to run simply for the love of it, with heart and soul as well as head and legs, and to try to share that joy with others.

Top hotel recommendation: Nagarkot Farmhouse

In this newsletter our top hotel recommendation is Nagarkot Farmhouse located on the hills around Kathmandu. The main building of this is a renovated old Newari house with raised ceiling, tiled floor and a fireplace. There is a lovely dining hall with an open fireplace, where you can sit, read, play, look at the mountains or simply chat with the friendly staff. On a clear morning dawn unveils a vista of eastern and the central Himalayan range, from towering Manaslu to the distant pyramid of Mt. Everest.

We stay at Nagarkot Farmhouse on the first night on trek for our Luxury Kathmandu Valley Rim trek.

Classic Circuit treks in Nepal

We are always updating content on The Mountain Company to help make our website a useful resource for planning your trip to the Himalaya. I have recently added a new webpage called Classic Circuit treks in Nepal to our Information Centre .

This article helps explain how the Classic Circuit treks compare in terms of scenery, culture, accommodation, grade and number of days on the trail. The Classic Circuit treks discussed are: Kanchenjunga Circuit, Everest High Passes, Manaslu Circuit, Annapurna Circuit and Dhaulagiri Circuit.

The Great Himalaya Trail ("GHT")

I have added a new webpage about The Great Himalaya Trail ("GHT") treks in our Information Centre under Choosing Your Holiday section. GHT1: Kanchenjunga ---> Kanchenjunga to Makalu

GHT 2: Makalu Barun ---> Makalu to Everest

GHT 3: Everest and Rolwaling ---> Everest High Passes

GHT 4: Langtang and Helambu ---> Langtang & Laurebina La

GHT 5: Manaslu and Ganesh ---> Manaslu Tsum valley

GHT 6: Annapurna and Mustang ---> Naar to Upper Mustang

GHT 7: Dolpa ---> Upper Dolpo to Jomsom
