October Newsletter

I have been in Nepal since mid-September and it is fantastic to see how quickly this country has recovered and is "building back better" after the earthquake in Spring.

In September I went for a 15 day recce trek to Everest region to inspect the current condition of the trail and lodges used by The Mountain Co. The Sherpas of the Everest region have worked very hard over the summer to rebuild lodges and repair the walking trails for the peak Autumn season. Overall the Everest region is in a pretty good shape and is open for trekkers this Autumn, please read my blog article for my key findings from my Everest recce trek

The above photo was taken at the newly rebuilt Everest Summit Lodge in Tashinga used for our Everest Luxury Lodges and Luxury Everest Base Camp treks. As you can see I am holding "I am in Nepal Now" poster, this is part of an international Nepal Now campaign promoted by Nepal Tourism Board that seeks to bring you a true and accurate picture of Nepal as it is now.

There was more good news in first week of October when the British government through Foreign & Commonwealth Office ("FCO") changed their travel advice to Nepal so they no longer advise against all but essential travel to most of the mountains of Nepal. Now FCO have relaxed their travel advice there should be no issues obtaining insurance coverage for Nepal.

Of course the best way to support to Nepal is to come out and visit now! This Autumn would be a great time to trek in Nepal as the trails will be quieter than usual and the flights to Kathmandu are great value. If you are interested in a last minute trip then we currently have availability on three camping treks in November:  Naar to Mustang GHT led by Tom Lawson and Gopal Tamang, Mera Peak Expedition led by Dom Rudd and Domi Sherpa and Kanchenjunga Circuit led by Almas Khan and Jire Rai.

It is always encouraging to see national press coverage featuring our trips and recently The Mountain Company was recommended by Telegraph Travel in their article "The World's Greatest Trails" under section "How to do it...The Great Himalaya Trail"

In 2016 we are organising treks along sections of The Great Himalaya Trail ("GHT") including Kanchenjunga to Makalu in late September, Makalu to Everest in early October, Upper Dolpo to Jomsom in May/ June, Naar to Upper Mustang in November and our epic 29 days Lunana Snowman (Bhutan) trek in late September.

In Summer 2016, we are excited to be returning to Pakistan and we have Ade Summers leading Snow Lake in July and K2 Base Camp and K2 & Gondogoro La in August. We have experienced strong demand for these treks so please get in touch soon if you like to join us in Pakistan.

As ever please get in contact if you have any questions or require further information on any of our trips to the Himalaya and Karakoram.

GPS SPOT trackers

For all of our western led treks we are now using GPS SPOT Gen3 trackers. This means that not only can TMC office follow the progress of our treks in the field but also friends and family can do do so too.

I have copied the links to the GPS SPOT adventures showing the current location maps for two of our treks at the moment....

Satellite phones and weather forecasts for our Himalayan treks

We have always taken the safety of our groups very seriously. We send Thuraya satellite phones with all of our groups therefore we have reliable communications with our leaders in the field. We also receive bespoke weather forecasts from EverestWeather.com. By investing in these services we reduce the overall risk of our groups and crew while trekking in the Himalaya.

Modified Everest itineraries

Following my recce trek to Everest region in September I found several new lodges recently built with better facilities and locations, we plan to use these properties for our Everest treks in 2016. We also now have two nights in Pangboche village on the way up, this works well for acclimatisation to high altitude and also our groups have a full day to walk up to the beautiful Ama Dablam Base Camp.

Please take a look at our newly modified Everest itineraries: Everest Base Camp, Everest Luxury Lodges, Luxury Everest Base Camp, Ama Dablam Base Camp and Everest High Passes.

Top hotel recommendation: The Beyul Hermitage and Farm

On my Everest recce in September I stayed at a new lodge called The Beyul Farm and Hermitage in Chuserma village. This property is located in a secluded and tranquil setting allowing trekkers to get away from the bustle of the main Everest trail on east bank of Dudh Khosi.

Nima Sherpa is the host, owner and chef; you will find this property offers an authentic Sherpa cultural experience. Nima uses seasonal local organic food in his cooking comes from their farm, local community gardens and surrounding villages. We are now using this property for our Everest Luxury Lodges and Luxury Everest Base Camp treks
