Be a Giving Heart!
Educate, Embrace and Empower New Americans!

Dear <<First Name>>,
What were you thinking about when you were 19 years old? What were your dreams? Recently, as I was getting the oil changed in my car, I chatted with Tom, (not his real name), a Bhutanese man who is celebrating 11 years in Grand Forks this week.  At 19, Tom and his family, along with over 100,000 other Nepali speaking Bhutanese people, were forced out of Bhutan. Tom had plans and dreams, all set aside when they had to leave his birthplace, the only land he had known, behind. Tom lived in the Nepal refugee camps for a while and was a volunteer teacher. They didn't get paid, but it was something to do. He left the camp and taught in a school in Nepal. Eventually, he returned to the camp, married, and started a family. So, when there were opportunities to resettle, Tom was ready and that is how he came to Grand Forks, through Lutheran Social Services' Resettlement program.

Since Tom has been in Grand Forks, he graduated from Northland Community and Technical College with a construction electricity diploma, purchased a home, saw his daughter graduate from Red River High School and now attend Northland Community and Technical College - and he and his wife, along with his mother-in-law, have become citizens. Both he and his wife are working and two of his children attend schools in Grand Forks. When I asked him what he missed the most, he said it was the "wide open spaces," because here in Grand Forks, so much has to happen inside.

Global Friends Coalition is working to help New Americans learn English and build the connections necessary out in the community to make Grand Forks feel like home. Your support has immense impact. Be a giving heart this coming Giving Hearts Day, Thursday, February 13th. You can give the day of, or schedule a gift through the same link today. Every gift, up to $6,500.00 will be matched thanks to our matching gift supporters: The Hal and Kathleen Gershman Foundation, Erin and Carter Kunz, and Jenna and Joe Zavoral
  • $20.00 purchases a picture dictionary for an in-home English mentor.
  • $50.00 provides an adult with one hour of behind-the wheel driver's education, offered in partnership with the Grand Forks Public Schools
  • $100.00 provides materials for 5 adults in our citizenship classes.
Through your timegifts, and support, you can make the difference in educating, empowering, and embracing New Americans - it's never been more important.
