November 2019
Global Friends Coalition is educating, empowering, and embracing New Americans!

November is a Time to Give Thanks!

Dear <<First Name>>,

My husband spotted a poem in The New York Times Magazine (9/22/19, p. 14) that he said captured what Global Friends encourages others to do. It's written by Danusha Lameris called, "Small Kindness." After I read it, I wanted to share it since the poem describes the day-to-day interactions that help us feel welcome.

We are fortunate in Greater Grand Forks to live around people who care. For those of us in Grand Forks, on the day of a fairly big snowstorm on October 10th, one of our neighbors came and took care of all the snow at the end of our driveway after the City plowed our street. On Halloween, I got lots of "thank yous" from children who came to my door.  I also received compliments about my house, too--from more than a few children. Just last week, when I was walking to my car parked in a parking lot, a driver started to back out so I moved quickly over to one side. The driver, rolled his window down and apologized--that's what I call North Dakota nice. And, how many of you have had someone hold the door open for you? These simple gestures make our community feel more friendly.I give thanks to our friendly community.

On November 24th, we are going to share our thanks at our fall fundraiser, Slice of Thanksgiving, and celebrate with a few community members who have received their citizenship this past year. Global Friends' "Pathway to Thriving Citizenship" campaign is in full swing and all donations are being matched by the Otto Bremer Trust. We hope that many of you will be able to join us at United Lutheran Church in Grand Forks from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. We promise to keep it to one hour. Come for pie, conversation, and to celebrate with some of our newest citizens.

If you'd like to contribute to our Path to Thriving Citizenship campaign, please visit our
website to donate online, or mail in your donation to Global Friends at 600 Demers Avenue; Suite 406A, Grand Forks, ND 58201. Your gifts help our neighbors become thriving citizens.

Sincerely,

Cynthia H. Shabb
