Vol 19 : Issue 7 : August 2016
Dear Friends of the House of Prayer,
I began last month’s newsletter by referencing the horrendous massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. Who would have thought that this month I’d be reflecting on another fatal shooting? This time in our own backyard at the Club Blu teen nightclub in Fort Myers. A shooting that left two dead and seventeen wounded.
All I wish to say this time around, is that this latest incident is symptomatic of deep systemic unrest in our community and nation at large. Whatever our role in the community, what we need to ask ourselves is 1) How may we be contributing to such violence possibly through negligence or indifference? And 2) What can we do at any level to address it at its root source?
On a lighter and brighter note, our July 16 yard sale took in a modest $500. Big thanks to Barb Darling and her small team of volunteers for the all the hours of planning and prep. The sale has allowed us to reconfigure one of the guesthouse rooms into a sitting room, cum library, cum bedroom.
On Monday, September 12 I’ll be on the radio! No, not as a presenter – as a voice in support of our local WGCR Community Campaign. If I, along with other non-profit representatives, can raise $1K for public radio during a one-hour show, our organization will be allocated 28 thirty second advertising slots over the next year. So obviously not an opportunity to pass up. I’ll be on the 1 – 2 pm slot, so tune in and pledge a little something for public radio, and you will be indirectly raising awareness of all that we offer here at HOP retreat center.
Event Sponsorship Opportunity
On that note we are looking for $100 level sponsors for our annual ‘Music Under the Oaks’ event in December. If you would like to be such a sponsor, just call us here at the office.
August at a Glance
Our monthly staples, the Richard Rohr DVD series and Centering Prayer group, will continue on the first Wednesday and second Monday of the month. Women’s Story Circle continues on the third Thursday, and our Board of Directors gets together on Saturday, the 27th for a half-day retreat, training, and business meeting.
As author Ronald Rolheiser once put it at a talk I attended some years ago, if you want to change the world, keep attending meetings!
