Kobayashi LC, O’Shea BQ, Joseph C, Finlay JM. Acute relationships between mental health and cognitive function during the COVID-19 pandemic: Longitudinal evidence from middle-aged and older US adults. SSM Ment Health. 2022;2:100097. doi:10.1016/j.ssmmh.2022.100097
This article explored the relationship between mental health concerns and cognitive function among middle-aged to older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Multiple PRO assessments were utilized, including the PROMIS Cognitive Function and Abilities scale. Results showed that increased mental health symptoms (e.g., loneliness, anxiety) were associated with worse cognitive function, foreshadowing long-term impacts on cognitive health as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ahmed O, Lee A, Vachharajani N, Chang SH, Park Y, Khan AS, Chapman WC, Doyle MM. Reviewing patient-reported outcomes 1 year after orthotopic liver transplantation. J Am Coll Surg. 2022;235(1):69-77. doi:10.1097/XCS.0000000000000244
This study investigated longer-term functional recovery and quality of life among patients after liver transplantation. Study participants (n=174) were surveyed at 3, 6 and 12 months following liver transplant surgery and completed the PROMIS 29-Profile assessment. While most domains improved, the domains of anxiety and sleep disturbance did not. Physical function, pain interference and depression scores – while high immediately postoperatively – returned to normative levels by 12 months. Further work is needed to understand barriers to anxiety and sleep domain improvement during the postoperative period.
Patil SJ, Tallon E, Wang Y, Nayyar M, Hodges K, Phad A, Rodriguez E, Gefter L. Effect of stanford youth diabetes coaches’ program on youth and adults in diverse communities. Fam Community Health. 2022;45(3):178-186. doi:10.1097/FCH.0000000000000323
This study describes an intervention to train youth and adult family members to serve as coaches for diabetes prevention in underserved areas. PROMIS measures, including the Pediatric Sense of Meaning and Purpose and Adult Global Health and Self-efficacy scales were utilized to evaluate the impact of training on youth and family member wellbeing. Survey data were also merged with qualitative data from participants. Results demonstrated a significant increase in youth sense of meaning and purpose and improved health behaviors (e.g., diet, physical activity) following the training. Family member involvement was also shown to mediate the relationships between training participation and improved health behaviors.
