Yedulla NR, Hester JD, Patel MM, Cross AG, Peterson EL, Makhni EC. Pre-visit digital messaging improves patient-reported outcome measure participation prior to the orthopaedic ambulatory visit. J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2022 Dec 2. doi:10.2106/JBJS.21.00506.
This prospective randomized controlled trial in an orthopaedic surgery context examined the effect of three strategies on pre-visit response rates for digital collection of PROMs (including several PROMIS CATs): no reminder, e-mail reminder, patient portal reminder. Only patients with an active patient portal were included. Patients in either reminder group received a notification to compete the PROMs 1 week before the visit with a second reminder message 3 days before. Patients in the no reminder group received only a generic automatic message about a new message in the patient portal 3 days before the visit. The analysis included 291 patients, with a response rate of 30% for the no reminder, 49% for the patient portal reminder, and 52% for the email reminder. The response rate in both reminder groups was higher than for the no reminder group, highlighting a potential strategy to increase remote PROM collection.

Parkhurst JT, Von Mach T, Vesco AT, Kerns CE, Lavigne JV. Comparative analysis of pediatric anxiety measures in clinical sample: evaluation of the PROMIS pediatric anxiety short forms. Qual Life Res. 2022 Dec 29. doi: 10.1007/s11136-022-03333-6
The authors examined the concurrent validity of the PROMIS-Pediatric Anxiety Short Form (self-report and proxy-report) compared to a well-established dimensional measure of pediatric anxiety (Screen for Child Anxiety and Related Emotional Disorder [SCARED]). There was a moderate correlation between PROMIS scores and some dimensions of the SCARED and a low or negligible correlation for other dimensions. The authors also looked at diagnostic accuracy and found that the area under the curve for some PROMIS predictions was acceptable but others were poor. In contrast, the area under the curve for SCARED predictions was acceptable to outstanding. The authors suggest additional psychometric investigation of PROMIS-Anxiety in clinical youth samples, especially relative to specific anxiety subtypes.

Dee JM, Littenberg B. Regional vs global physical therapy interventions to treat chronic pain in survivors of trauma: a randomized controlled trial. J Man Manip Ther. 2022 Dec 25:1-12. doi: 10.1080/10669817.2022.2159615. Epub ahead of print. PMID: 36567611.
The authors used the PROMIS-Physical Function CAT as the primary outcome in this clinical trial. They examined the effects of a 6-week impairment-based regional physical therapy approach versus a 6-week “global” physical therapy approach (pain neuroscience education, graded motor imagery, exercise) for adults with chronic pain and a history of trauma. Secondary outcomes included PROMIS-Pain Interference CAT and PROMIS-29. There was no significant between-group difference for the primary outcome. However, while white participants had reduced pain interference with both interventions, nonwhite participants only had reduced pain interference with the global intervention, highlighting potential racial and ethnic differences related to pain cognitions and behaviors.
