DLIA Officers’ Election in 2020

Normally in even-numbered years, the DLIA membership would elect President, Vice President and Secretary at the Annual Meeting.  However, because of COVID-19, the Annual Meeting has been cancelled. Therefore, the Executive Board has approved the following election procedure for this most atypical year:

  1.  Convene a Nominating Committee (see Bylaws VII.A. Nominating Committee) to consider potential candidates and present a slate of candidates to the Executive Board (EB).  Suzanne Witthoff agreed to chair the Committee; members were Jennifer Bates (member at large), Marty Foster and Cheryl Krehbiel. At its July 9th meeting, the DLIA EB received and approved the Nominating Committee’s recommended  slate of candidates for these Offices:

  • President - Mary Ellen Sheridan (second term)
  • Vice President - Bill Foster
  • Secretary - Barb Huey (second term)

  1. Call for “Nominations from the Floor”-in accordance with DLIA’s Bylaws V.A.5. Any Association member in good standing of DLIA may present any other member’s name, with that member’s consent, for an office at the Association’s Annual Meeting at which such Officer is being elected. To meet this requirement, the July 13, 2020 eNews is the Announcement of an open Call for Nominations from the Membership.

  1. Any member wishing to nominate another member, with that member’s consent, should email the nominee’s name and the applicable office to nominations@douglaslake.org. The Chair of the Nominating Committee will receive such nominations on behalf of the Association. Any electronic nominations must be received by midnight July 23, 2020.

  1. There are a small number of Association members who do not receive eNews or electronic communications from the Association.  These members will receive a hard copy of the July 13, 2020 eNews Announcement of the Call for “Nominations from the Floor” mechanism, including an envelope to mail any nominations and the applicable office to DLIA Nominations, PO Box 472, Pellston, MI 49769. Any nominations must be postmarked no later than July 23, 2020.

  1. An electronic ballot process is currently under development using Google Forms. Association members who receive eNews will get a link to the electronic ballot presenting the Executive Board-approved slate of candidates, and any eligible “floor” nominations, as described above.  Association members who do not receive eNews will receive a hard copy version of the electronic ballot through the U.S. Postal Service including a return envelope directed to DLIA Ballot, PO Box 472, Pellston, MI 49769. The proposed deadline for submission of ballots (by email or USPS postmark) is August 24th.  The election results will be tabulated and checked for voting membership eligibility by Suzanne Witthoff and Holly Gedert, Past President.

4.REMINDER:  a “DLIA Membership” may include 2 adult members (e.g. husband and wife share a single membership). For voting purposes, only one vote is permitted per membership.  Please be sure only 1 voter submits either the electronic or paper ballot.

Outcome of the election will be announced in a September eNews and again in the November DLIA Newsletter.

[Editor’s note:  sincere apologies for the laborious explanation of the 2020 election process.  This seemed the only way to advise the membership of how a valid, by-laws compliant nomination and election process could be managed.]
