Pellston Public Schools schedules August bond election

On August 8, Pellston Public Schools will ask voters to support a bond proposal that will finance the construction of a new field house for student and community use.

The field house will serve several purposes, according to School Superintendent Stephen Seelye. “The facility will enhance the athletic program, provide fitness and cardio programs for community members, have a meeting room for school and community use, and even serve as an indoor recess space for elementary students during unfavorable weather conditions,” he said.

The proposed fieldhouse will be used for all sports and will contain space for a variety of athletic activities. It will have two basketball courts; two fitness/weight rooms, one for students and one for community members; a dedicated wrestling room; space for cheerleading, volleyball, baseball, and softball practice; a walking track; and, a community room for school use and events.

Seelye said that the field house would be for both student and community use. “First, it will greatly improve our athletic and physical fitness spaces,” he emphasized. “Second, it will allow us to convert our existing weight room back to a band room for high school students, and third, the field house will provide a venue for community meetings and community physical fitness.”

Seelye also noted that the field house would enable all activities to take place regardless of Pellston’s weather conditions.

The $11.75 million field house would be located on the north side of the elementary campus. It would be financed by a bond proposal that requires a 1.8 mill tax increase. For a homeowner living in a $100,000 home with a tax assessed value of $50,000, the cost would be $90 per year, or $7.50 per month. Some Pellston homeowners would pay more, but most homeowners would pay less than $7.50 per month.

Pellston Public Schools will provide community members with detailed information about the bond proposal during the coming months.

Residents with questions about the August bond proposal are invited to contact School Superintendent Seelye by email at sseelye@pellstonschools.org or by phone at 231/539-8421 ext: 10001.
