Loon Chicks are not Waterproof
They need to be able to climb up on their parents' backs to stay warm and dry. When watercraft come close, parents leave their chicks to defend their territory.
Young chicks are very buoyant and cannot dive quickly to get out of the way. They can be run over.
Chicks tire easily. The presence of watercraft causes them to keep swimming instead of feeding and resting. This can weaken them, affecting their ability to survive.

Since our last eNews, Rich and I housed 2 researchers
from Oakland University who were doing Swimmer's Itch research on our lake. The budget at Oakland is limited and they like to save by staying in residents' homes. Please let me know if you would like to open your home for one night of lodging for Oakland University students.
Thank you - Holly Gedert, President, DLIA
