Is DL Road Brine Material Radioactive? NO
In recent years, there have been some claims that radioactive (fracking waste) materials are used in road brining (for dust reduction on dirt roads) in areas near Douglas Lake.  Several residents in different areas which use road brining provided samples taken this summer pre- and post- brine to the analytical chemist at the University of Michigan Biological Station.
The findings have now been released to DLIA. Samples pre- and post-brine were analyzed for total ionizing radiation using a hand-held Geiger counter on maximum sensitivity. Total radiation (alpha + beta + gamma) was below -0.025 mRem/hr – that is, not elevated above ambient [background natural radiation] for any sample assayed.
TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) is not yet completed. This procedure tests for presence of any daughter products of radioactive decay of known probable radionuclides, in addition to the presence of heavy metals.  We will share more data from UMBS chemist as available.

Fall Womenade Gathering September 28th – McKinley Township Hall
The final 2019 Womenade gathering is set for Saturday, September 28, 2019.  This is the annual “Bring a Guest (or Guests)” event.  There is a new location this autumn – meet us at McKinley Township Hall, 1820 US-31, across from the Pellston Airport.  New faces would be welcome!
As usual, we start at 6:00pm. Please bring a dish to pass and your own beverage. Plates, silverware, and cups are provided.  This is our final opportunity to request funds to help our neighbors through the winter.  The suggested donation is $35. But the amount you donate is totally up to you. Thank you in advance for helping Womenade help others in our area.
Please RSVP to Kim Grant via text or phone to 989-506-0401 or email to grant1kj@gmail.com.
