Tour the Piping Plover Captive Rearing Facility at the Biological Station!

Piping plovers nest only in North America and are considered one of the continent’s most imperiled shore birds.  Thanks to a decades-long effort at the Biological Station, including captive rearing of young raised from abandoned eggs, their populations around the Great Lakes are rebounding.  Come hear a short lecture about plover work from the professor responsible for this remarkable rebound, Dr. Francie Cuthbert, and tour the Station’s plover rearing facility, which is staffed by volunteer zookeepers from around the country.  Viewing the baby plovers themselves is likely but not guaranteed, pending evaluation of their condition the morning of the event.

Date and Time:  Saturday June 3, 10 am. - meet at the Gates Lecture Hall

Bring sunshine to someone's day  -  Brave Hearts Boating Days

We have a special opportunity to provide a boating experience on our lake for some Brave Hearts injured veterans!  As you read in the DLIA May 2017 newsletter, special access to northern Michigan is being generously provided by the Brave Hearts Estate located near the Pellston airport. Their location couldn't give us a more perfect opportunity to provide them access to our awesome lake.

One pontoon boat ride is scheduled for Friday, June 16 (rain date will be Saturday, June 17). The ride will include a “tour” of Douglas Lake from 1:30 pm to about 4 pm starting at the Douglas Lake Rd. launch. Another tour is scheduled for Friday, June 30th (rain date is the next day) and two pontoon boats are needed.

Bring sunshine to someone’s day! Please give Linda Orlow a call at 231-838-4484 or e-mail LindaOrlow@gmail.com to volunteer your time and boat.

Loon chicks hatched on the Maple Bay platform 5/30/2017. Two healthy chicks are now off the nest. Please keep your distance from the family. Going nearby could separate the chicks from their parents which can affect survival.
Your help is appreciated in the Loon Nesting Preservation effort.

Here's the link to nesting images. (or click the above image.)
The nest images at Maple Bay were captured by a modified trail cam attached to the nest. Pictures are added frequently.
