High Water
Bob Vande Kopple, UMBS resident biologist, posted on Facebook a graph of Douglas Lake average water levels over the past 75 years by month. The trend shows that October is generally not a high water month, but this year is different.  He says that Douglas Lake is normally just over 712 feet in October, and as of 10/21/14, it is almost 714 feet, 2 feet higher than normal.  The high water is due to record breaking snowfall in the area last winter, a cool summer, less evaporation than normal, and almost 10" of rain so far for September and October.  The water level usually rises one foot with spring runoff so there is the possibility that we may reach the historic max of just below 715 feet.

For readers wishing more information, Bob passed along the following article from MLive by Mark Torregrossa, 10/9/14, which addresses the high water levels of Michigan's Great Lakes. http://www.mlive.com/weather/index.ssf/2014/10/michigans_great_lakes_water_le.html

WHERE IS YOUR BOAT?

With the water levels higher than normal, we are seeing boats drifting off to other locations on the lake.  Jan Huntley reported that she has seen 4 boats so far and has found the owners.  Please check or have a neighbor verify that your boat is secure.

Boat Ramp improvements

Improvements were made to the Douglas Lake Rd boat ramp on Wednesday, August 27, by Super M Excavating of Pellston, MI.  Several boaters have said the boat ramp is much easier with the even slope and with the new dock.

The Boat Ramp Committee led by Chick Hershberger, has been evaluating the launch area.  They are working with the road commission and the township.  They are in the process of settling on one contractor to maintain our ramp in the future.  Last year we selected Ginop Construction and the owner retired before Spring 2014.  E F Wilkinson & Sons was hired to do the Fall 2014 job, but due to their full schedule before Labor Day, Super M did the work.
