Let's go OUTSIDE for Stream Monitoring at the Maple River
This coming Saturday 2/24/2018 from 10:30am - 3:00pm, is the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council's 12th Annual Winter Stream Monitoring and Appreciation Potluck at the Bio Station. They will be sampling on the Maple River south of the dam. The dam on Lake Kathleen is being removed this summer, and they want to sample there one last time.  After the sampling adventure, an appreciation potluck will take place at the Bio Station.  Please call 231-347-1181 if you plan to attend.

DNR reminds anglers of ice shanty removal dates and urges caution

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminds anglers that mandatory ice shanty removal dates are approaching. Regardless of the date, shanties must be removed as soon as the ice is unable to safely support them. The ice quickly can become unsafe for anglers to retrieve their property in warmer weather.
The deadline for removal from waters in the northern Lower Peninsula is midnight Thursday, March 15.

Following the mandatory removal dates, ice shanties still may be used but must be removed daily from the ice.

Shanty owners whose structures fall through the ice are subject to penalties of up to 30 days in jail, fines of $100 to $500, or both. If a shanty is removed by a government agency, the court can require the owner to reimburse that agency for an amount of up to three times the cost of removal.

For more information on Michigan’s ice fishing regulations and shanty removal dates, check out the 2017 Michigan Fishing Guide.

DNR conservation officers also remind individuals venturing onto the ice to use extreme caution as temperatures begin to rise in the spring. The repetitive thawing and refreezing of ice weakens its integrity, decreasing its ability to support additional weight from individuals, snowmobiles and shanties. Deteriorating ice, water currents and high winds increase the probability of pressure cracks, which can leave anglers and others stranded on ice flows or at risk of falling through the ice.

Have you heard of Box Tops for Education?
These small rectangular coupons are found on the packaging of many products and merchandise.  I’m asking you all to “clip and save” these coupons when you come across them and bring them to the DL Womenade meetings during this coming summer or pass them to someone going to a meeting.

I’ll be volunteering with Pellston Schools starting in the fall to collect and submit the Box Tops for Education. Each coupon is worth 10 cents. The Box Tops are submitted twice a year (February and October) and checks are sent back to the school twice a year (March and November).

I’ve been collecting the Box Tops for my grandchildren’s school for years and it’s become second-nature to cut them off product packaging.  It’s quick, easy and costs you nothing more than what you are already spending for food and merchandise.

Please help out this worthwhile project
that will result in extra dollars for Pellston Schools.
Thank you ~~ Marilyn Kelemen
