Clean Boats, Clean Waters

Sporting blue t-shirts, volunteers help boaters inspect equipment for aquatic invasive species.  Over the Labor Day Weekend, Susan O' Dwyer, Dan Oldham, Mark Paddock, Bob and Mary Ann Huntington, Linda and Steve Alexander, and Sue and Pete Klaas informed and provided materials for boaters about actions to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.

In other news, Sam Gaither, Sue Klaas, and Pete Klaas assisted Kevin Cronk of Tip of the Mitt in completing the emergent plant portion of the aquatic plant survey of the lake. (Emergent plants are those that are above the surface, like pond lily and bulrushes that are near/on shore or very shallow water).  Again, no invasive species were found.

Thanks to all for caring about our lake, and for helping to keep our lake clean.

Volunteer Lake Monitoring

Monitoring water quality provides valuable information to help protect and improve water quality in the lakes of northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan.  Dick Segrist has been monitoring Douglas Lake for about 25 years.   It is a weekly job for about 10 weeks during the summer.  Dick says,  â€It’s very easy to do”, and he turns in about 8 reports each time.  Click here to see the resulting reports from his effort.

Dick would like to share the job, or even turn it over to someone new.  He welcomes showing others how to provide this valuable information to the Tip of the Mitt.  Volunteering to be a monitor requires attending a half-day training session and then performing  1-4 hours of monitoring duties on a weekly basis from early June to late August. (more info…)

Is this something you would enjoy doing?  Send an email to Gail Beaver, Volunteer Chairperson, gailbeav@umich.edu to volunteer.

Thanks to Dick for his time and great contribution through the years!
