Printcolor Update 1 / 2022
90 years - A special anniversary with a view

Dear Sir or Madam <<Surname>>

As we celebrate a special anniversary, it is our great pleasure to share our values and history with you, our valued readers. We have created an anniversary logo for this unique occasion that illustrates both our tradition and our future.

In this special edition, together with owner and CEO Marc Bär, we look back on the last ten years, describe the current challenges and give you an outlook on an exciting future. Our anniversary newsletter finishes with an overview of the most important events of our history since the company was founded by our former owner Eugen Keller.

Our 90-year history made us what we are today: an independent Swiss family-owned company where employees and cooperation with business partners will always be at the centre of what we do.

Thank you for your loyalty and here’s to the next ten years together!

The milestones of the last ten years

Marc Bär gives us a brief summary of the last ten years: “Over the last decade, we have evolved from manufacturing printing inks for the graphics industry to producing inks for technical applications and security printing.” The following events were the most significant for us:
In 2014, we founded Squid Inks AG together with Markus Hieronymus. Thanks to his hands-on involvement at Printcolor, we were able to make active use of synergies and thus increase the valuable expertise and experience at our disposal. In addition, thanks to him and the whole team, the technology department has also been significantly developed. At the same time, Andres Cordero was trained and continuously prepared for his current role as Technical Director.

In the same year, we closed our production site in Zofingen, Switzerland. Despite the high degree of automation, a continuous drop in prices on the market for publication gravure inks made it impossible to continue production from an economic point of view. Flexographic ink production, which also took place in Zofingen, was successfully integrated at the Berikon site in Switzerland.

In 2017, we decided to implement a new ERP system. This was a very large and complex project for us, which we successfully completed on schedule at the beginning of 2019. The ERP system offers us many possibilities that will help us to move forward in the future.

In 2020, Patrick Strebel took over the responsible position of Chief Operating Officer. Marc Bär comments: “The newly created position allows me as Chair of the Board of Directors and CEO to be able to focus on our strategy and its implementation, as well as on important projects.”

Marc Bär is particularly pleased that his youngest son Philip has been actively supporting the Operations department as project manager since 1 May 2021, thus contributing to the continuation of the family business.

Current challenges

In most markets, we are competing with large multinational companies which benefit from economies of scale in many respects. We want to stand out from this competition with our agility and team spirit in order to achieve market success in a faster and more efficient way.

One of the biggest challenges is the availability of raw materials, and this will remain the case in the future. The continuous shift of raw material production to Asia in the years before the COVID-19 pandemic, significantly longer delivery times from 2021 onwards due to transport and production difficulties as well as drastic price increases are all resulting in enormous expenses in the areas of purchasing and technology. Regular changes to the classification of raw materials are an additional challenge, but we also see these as an opportunity to continually review our product range and keep it up to date.

Outlook for the next 10 years

Our brand promise is to deliver user-friendly, sophisticated and high quality printing inks and varnishes with innovative properties and functions, quickly and reliably. This is what we stand for and will continue to work on over the next 10 years. We want to strengthen our brand and strive to continuously improve our products. Close cooperation with our global partners is crucial for us in this regard.
Another important goal for us is to be an attractive employer and offer both existing and future employees the best possible opportunities for development. At Printcolor, people are always at the focus of what we do.

In the midst of planning the new building, we are already looking forward to the new company location. The continued success of the family business is of central importance to Marc Bär. He explains: “I am committed to responsibly handing over the management of the company to the next generation and the management team. And we are of course looking forward to the company’s 100th anniversary!”

A brief look back

It all started with the Leipzig company “Springer & Möller”, a manufacturer of paints, floor polishes and printing inks, and its decision to open a branch in Switzerland in 1932.

This company quickly became profitable and was perceived as local thanks to the dedicated efforts of the entire team and the Keller family’s strategically skilled management, even in uncertain times.

In 1961, the German shareholders sold their property, clearing the way for the foundation of “Printcolor”. The change of ownership and name enabled the new management team to purposefully pursue new avenues and gain new strengths from the challenges.

In the following historical report, former owner Eugen Keller recollects the beginnings of Printcolor. He describes the major challenges that our company has dealt with up to the market situation in 2012.
