Power of Choice Update


Power of Choice reform is just over 12 months away. Effective 1 December 2017, the national reform will allow customers to make informed choices about their electricity use, including tariffs.

In Queensland, this change means that Energex and Ergon Energy will no longer install or replace meters at a customer premises. This work will be performed by contestable meter providers nominated by the customer’s retailer. Energex and Ergon Energy will continue to read and maintain their existing meters until these are eventually replaced by retailers’ meters.
 
Trials have commenced which will see some new connections across South East Queensland under the new reform, with customers’ nominated Meter Provider responsible for metering installation and Energex responsible for the premises network connection. Until both these pieces of work have been completed, the customer will not be able to consume electricity.

The below diagrams demonstrate a basic installation where Energex will be energising to the Meter Isolation Link (MIL) and the Meter Provider energising from the MIL through their metering to the Main Switch:

Positive Payback Incentives for Business


If you have a business customer that is planning to undertake an energy efficiency upgrade or install Power Factor Correction (PFC) equipment which permanently reduces their electrical demand, they may be entitled to receive funding from Energex. 
 
Recently, the funding incentives have increased to $185/kVA reduction for energy efficiency upgrades and $41/kVAR for PFC projects (terms and conditions apply).
