YES Prep will increase the number of students from underserved communities who graduate from college prepared to lead. For twenty years, this statement has been the mission of YES Prep Public Schools, and we often emphasize the number of students who have graduated from college as proof of our impact. Over the past nine days, we have seen countless shining examples of why the second phrase in our mission statement—"prepared to lead”—matters just as much.
As Houston faced a crisis of unprecedented magnitude, YES Prep students and alumni were ready to serve and lead in their communities:
A senior at YES Prep Southeast quickly established himself as such as capable leader that he was put in charge of a crew of 500 volunteers in the hard-hit Pasadena community. After seeing him in action, Pasadena’s mayor and fire chief both pledged to personally write his college letters of recommendation.
Twenty-four hours after her own home was destroyed and she and her siblings rescued by helicopter from their rooftop, a YES Prep alumna was at the George R. Brown, serving others and volunteering at the shelter.
YES Prep alumni at colleges across the country are rallying their peers to organize donation drives to get badly-needed supplies into the hands of families.
Our hearts are heavy to witness the widespread devastation. Yet we are sustained and uplifted by stories like these.
Recovering from Harvey will be a marathon, not a sprint. YES Prep families are still in desperate need of immediate assistance. Here are some ways you can help:
