Team Onyx wins ACE Robotics Competition

Carlos, ninth-grader, and Abraham, sixth-grader, from YES Prep West dominate every round

"Two of our most dedicated club members are Carlos Segura, ninth-grader, and Abraham Zepeta, sixth-grader. This is their first year in robotics and together they formed Team Onyx. Carlos and Abraham have shown up for every meeting and were the first to complete their robot, a full month in advance, allowing them the opportunity to practice for a month before the competition. "

"I joined YPP in 2017 and began by learning about our annual events, helping out wherever possible, and getting to know the group - YPP is a great group of young professionals who are dedicated to YES Prep’s mission. After one year with the group, I was interested in a leadership role and stepped into the Chair position. Now I’m focused on setting fundraising and volunteering goals for the group and facilitating the organization of our yearly events."

"I am originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, but my family and I moved to the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex when I was seven. We came here as refugees due to a civil war that was occurring in my country at the time. I lived in Dallas Forth Worth for the remainder of my adolescent years before attending The University of Texas at Austin for my undergraduate degree. I majored in both Economics and Marketing with minors in International Business and African and African American Studies."
