Yesterday morning, Olivia, a YES Prep alumni, her 3 year old and 6 year old siblings, and the rest of her family were airlifted off the roof of their house as flood waters closed in. They have lost absolutely everything. I wish so badly that Olivia’s story was unique, but it isn’t. Communities all over Houston have been decimated by this storm, and given the location of many of the YES Prep campuses, many of our families have born the brunt of this catastrophic storm.
In the midst of this tragedy, there are beaming lights of hope coming from members of the YES Prep family, many of whom have been personally impacted by the storm, as they go above and beyond to help each other, their neighbors, our children, and the city.
Through the generous donations of many of you and many of the friends and families of YES Prep, we have already raised over $77,000 that will go directly to support the relief effort for our families hit hardest by the storm.
We now have set up the specific donation link for the YES Prep Family Flood Relief Fund. You can continue to use the general YES Prep donation site, just please enter the words “Flood Relief” in the comments section so that we can properly direct those funds.
We want to stress that every single penny in this fund will go DIRECTLY to support our families and teammates who have been most severely impacted. We are already working on a plan for how to distribute the funds equitably across all of our campuses, and we will be calling on campus resources, like our amazing Student Support Counselors, to ensure that the funds get into the hands of those most in need.
Please share this message with your networks.
Finally, we are actively exploring ways to collect other types of donations, such as clothing, household goods, etc. Until we can safely access our facilities, we are not yet able to mobilize any specific plans, but we are considering possibilities and will communicate decisions as soon as possible. Cash donations are still immensely important because this allows us to focus resources on the specific needs of each family in our community, so for the time being, we are continuing to encourage cash donations.
Thank you so much for your incredible generosity and for raising awareness of the giving opportunity through your networks, family, and friends.
