CLiF Summer Readers

It's CLiF's Summer Readers Season!

Remember, when you were a kid, the pleasure of diving into a great book on a lazy summer day?

CLiF is spreading that joy through almost 50
Summer Readers presentations to 3,300 low-income, at-risk, and rural readers throughout NH and VT. At each event, an author or storyteller talks with children about the power and joy of books and reading, highlights new titles, shares inspiring stories, and then each child chooses two new books to keep.

Check out our
map of Summer Readers locations, and please come join us! It would be wonderful to see you.

Warm summer wishes,

Duncan, Suzanne, Julia, Gretchen, and Katie

Bright Blue Bookshelves in Stratford, NH

Bright Blue Bookshelves is a new literacy initiative to keep kids reading and keep home libraries stocked with new books throughout the summer.
Stratford residents may borrow or swap any books or magazines they discover on the blue shelves. The shelves have been strategically placed in high-traffic areas, including two local stores and the elementary school.
Kathy Roth, CLiF's Community Literacy coordinator in Stratford, implemented the idea after learning about it from Brigid Hubberman, executive director of Family Reading Partnership in Ithaca, NY and guest speaker at CLiF's first Community Literacy conference.

Bobbin Mill residents enjoy their new books

Pilot Year of the Book Program Wraps Up at Bobbin Mill Housing Complex

CLiF Program Coordinator Julia Rogers recounts a special pilot Year of the Book program at the Bobbin Mill housing complex in Burlington, VT.

Over the course of a year, kids enjoyed storytelling, held a cultural diversity celebration, and participated in a poetry slam workshop. At the final event on Monday, they showed author Elizabeth Bluemle how they wokka-wokka. And now they have an armful of new books to enjoy over summer vacation.
