Rabbi Shalom Morris Appointed as Rabbi of Bevis Marks Synagogue.
The Spanish and Portuguese Jews’ Congregation is delighted to announce the appointment of Rabbi Shalom Morris as new Rabbi of Bevis Marks Synagogue.
Rabbi Morris joins us from our sister Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue in New York’s Upper West Side, ‘Shearith Israel,’ where he has served as Educational Director since 2009. He received rabbinic ordination in 2006 from Yeshiva University and has also served as Assistant Rabbi at Lincoln Square Synagogue, New York.
Under his leadership, the Shearith Israel Hebrew School (the oldest institution of Jewish education in America) more than trebled in size. Rabbi Morris also led the congregational youth and beginners’ Shabbat service, ensuring that the S&P minhag was transmitted to the next generation and to those new to the community. In addition, Rabbi Morris is a PhD candidate in Jewish History at Yeshiva University. His research focuses on Bevis Marks and her New World satellite communities covering the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries.
Rabbi Morris will continue the development of Bevis Marks into a social hub, educational centre and resource for the City of London, as well as overseeing the growth of the existing Bevis Marks community.
Senior Rabbi Joseph Dweck commented: “I am delighted that we have been able to finalise the appointment of Rabbi Morris. Having a full time Rabbi at Bevis Marks will enable us to maximise the potential of our flagship synagogue”.
Parnas Presidente, Adam Musikant commented: “It’s a great moment for the Bevis Marks community to be able to welcome such a dynamic, new Rabbi who will add to the recent transformation of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews’ Congregation which is seeing unprecedented growth since the arrival of Senior Rabbi Joseph Dweck”.
We look forward to welcoming Rabbi Morris into our community and are confident that his passion and enthusiasm for our minhag, as well as his exciting plans, will ensure his success in the role.
