Money Wise

Volume 11; Issue 3

The time of year that we reluctantly throw on a sweater after supper has arrived. Summer isn’t technically over just yet, but we can certainly feel the fall chill. Hopefully you have had a good opportunity to enjoy the sunshine and didn't experience too much damage from the Arthur storm!
First of all, in Trinity company news, we are happy to inform you Patricia Bell has joined the team here at Trinity. Patricia has been in the financial planning industry for close to 30 years and is a licensed advisor with Quadrus as well as being a licensed insurance broker. She is a very active volunteer at Bedford United Church and, along with her Golden-Doodle “Chester”, she works with the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program. Welcome to the team Patricia!
In other news, Rick had the opportunity to travel to New York in June with Capital Group investments and meet with some excellent fund managers and advisors. During the conference he was able to hear many managers’ and advisors’ opinions on global investing and active fund management to assist in building and maintaining effective investment portfolios. You can read the Forum Highlights here.
This quarter’s newsletter features some of the highlights of our resource centre, including Rick’s market commentary and insights into the RRIF withdrawal rates, Melissa’s comparison of common-law and marriage, my introduction to RESPs (just in time for school!), and Patricia’s introduction to investment asset classes.
As always, if there is any topic area you would like to see covered in our newsletter or our online resource centre, let us know.

Market Watch

Rick Irwin, CFP, CLU

Canada has been the recent star of the global economic recovery, becoming one of the best-performing markets in 2014. Many of the global threats to market growth have faded, supporting a positive outlook for the remainder of the year. However, a mid-cycle correction is to be expected as a positive development in this bull market.

Common Law vs. Marriage

Melissa Allan

It seems more common in recent years that people don’t enter legal marriages and instead often live common law for their entire life, thinking it’s the same thing but it really isn’t. I thought it would be a good idea...

An Intro to RESPs

Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs) are often a key vehicle to saving for your child’s education. RESPs provide tax-deferred investment growth along with access to the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG), and can be opened as a family, or for...

Changing the RRIF Rules

Rick Irwin, CFP, CLU

The C.D. Howe Institute recently released a research paper entitled ‘Outliving Our Savings’ suggesting the Federal government revise the rates at which Canadians are forced to withdrawal from their Registered Retirement Savings Plans. These plans must be converted to RRIFs...

Patricia Bell, PFP

When you’re investing liquid assets in markets there are three basic types of assets to invest in:  cash, fixed income and equities.
