Last week one of our Members introduced volunteer opportunities at Yick Wo Elementary School. Please read below for a full list of ways to pitch-in to help the children and teachers of one of our community's beloved schools.
LITERACY VOLUNTEER WORK (1st Grade)
Volunteer Days: Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays from 9:50AM - 1:20PM
Volunteer Time: 30 minutes
Join 1st grade classes in extra reading help. Includes reading to small groups, reading one-on-one to students, working in small groups focusing on sight words, letter formation and phonetics (flash cards, etc.)
MATH VOLUNTEER WORK (4th and 5th Grades)
Volunteer Days: Anyday Monday - Friday 11:35AM - 12:45PM
Volunteer Time: 70 minutes
Support will entail working with students one-on-one or in small groups to help them better understand math strategies that are being taught that day as well as helping students better understand math word problems.
LUNCH RECESS SUPPORT
Volunteer Days: Monday - Friday 12:20PM - 1:00PM
Volunteer Times: 30 - 40 Minutes
Play games with small groups, examples of interacting with children can be as simple as blowing bubbles or drawing with sidewalk chalk. Walkaround the yard and participate in small conflict resolution.
SPECIAL DAY AUTISM FOCUS CLASS & 4th and 5th GENERAL EDUCATION PARNTERING EXERCISES:
Volunteer Days: Fridays from 2:00PM - 3:00PM
Volunteer Times: 60 Minutes
Students from 4th and 5th grade in general education and the special day autism focused classes partner up for buddy activities. Examples include: playing catch or kicking a ball back and forth, using the play equipment-slide, rock wall, bars. Volunteers would help assist with partners-helping facilitate interactions keeping the students with the group and helping set up the activities.
OFFICE HELP
Volunteer Days: Monday - Friday
Volunteer Times: 11:15AM - 12:00PM
Volunteers would help with checking-in visitors and volunteers, answering phones, help students with injuries, tardy slips, calling home when sick, general inquiries as well as sorting mail and packages.

AS CHAIR OF CHILDREN & FAMILIES
It is a great opportunity to make a real difference in Russian Hill through:
- Planning, in conjunction with committee members and parent volunteers, social events and activities for local Russian Hill families.
- Keeping the RHN Board informed and advocating for important issues affecting Russian Hill families.
- Serving as a point of contact and resource for local families.
- Having a voice on the RHN Board to help shape our community.
- Organizing regular meetings of the Families with Children Committee.
