Marquita Aguilar Honored

MarquitaCongratulations Marquita! During a Sept. 19 ceremony, the VCU Staff Senate changed the name of its annual Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship Walk-A-Thon and Scholarship to the Marquita Aguilar Walk-A-Thon and Scholarship. Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation

David Wojahn Wins Poetry Prize

David WojahnCongratulations to David Wojahn from the Department of English! He has been awarded the Academy of American Poets' Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize for the most outstanding book of poetry published in the United States in the previous year for his book World Tree

The MFA Program in Creative Writing Visiting Writers Series welcomes Stanley Plumly (Orphan Hours) and Harrison Fletcher (Descanso for My Father) for a reading and Q and A session on October 11 at 7 PM in the Scott House, 909 W. Franklin St. Full details can be found here.

Victorians Institute Annual Conference

The Dept. of English hosts the Victorians Institute Annual Conference on October 19-20. Highlights include a Thursday evening Curators' tour of British Arts and Crafts and Sporting Art collections at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Plenary Address by W. J. T. Mitchell: "Seeing Madness: Insanity, Media, and Visual Culture." The complete schedule of events can be found on the Victorians Institute Annual Conference website.

Fall Faculty Meeting Rescheduled

Our annual CHS Fall Faculty Meeting, originally scheduled for October 16, will now be held on October 24 from 3 to 4:30 PM in the Richmond Salons I & II. Dean Coleman will say a few words and introduce newly hired faculty members for 2012-13.

Anthropology Speaker's Series Begins

Dr. MeansBernard Means will speak on “Stones, Bones, Bugs, and Lasers: 3D Laser Scanning at the Virtual Curation Laboratory and Beyond.” on Wednesday, October 17th from 3 – 4:30 PM in the Student Commons Theater. Lectures by Bob Brier and Buck Woodward follow later in the semester. Dates and times can be found here.

Dorris Douglas Budd Award Finalists

CHS has four finalists for this year's award: Janice P. Guyer, (Physics), Frances Lynch, (Mass Comm), Hollyn T. Mangione, (Mathematics and Applied Mathematics), and Wanda P. Clary, (STS Program & Dean's Office). Dr. Rao will announce the 2012 winner and honor the other finalists at a reception on October 4. The complete list of nominees can be found here.

Honor Roll of Donors

Lois Badey and Bethanie Constant, with the help of the Dean's Council, have renamed the Dean's Society giving levels and published an Honor Roll of donors from 2011-12. The donors were thanked in an email which contained a link to our Honor Roll of Donors.

"Communicating Science" Spaces Still Available

Make plans to attend our seminar on the topic: "Communicating Science: Tools for Scientists and Engineers" presented by AAAS. the seminar will be held on Thursday, October 18th. Complete details are at the Proposal Development blog.

Alumni Spotlight: Kathy Grzegorek

Kathleen Grzegorek received a BA in Psychology from VCU in 1982, and later attended the Temple University School of Law. In December 1990, she was admitted to the State Bar of California, and went on to be a founding partner of Stone & Grzegorek LLP, one of the nation’s leading firms specializing in immigration law.
