Happy Holidays!

Throughout the year on our Facebook page and Twitter we've wished people a Happy Diwali, Eid Mubarak, and a happy Chanukah. In the upcoming weeks we'll wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy Kwanzaa. Because this is our final faculty/staff newsletter of 2012 and winter break is coming up soon, we want to wish all of you the best for this holiday season and for a safe and happy new year! Images of Slavery in Richmond

Dr. Breonca Trofort speaks on the topic Images of Slavery in Richmond at 6:30 pm on Friday, December 14 as part of the Department of African American Studies Community Course Series. The lecture will be held at the East District Family Resource Center. Details can be found here.

VCU Alumnus Wins Poetry Prize

Alumnus Dexter Booth, who received a BFA in 2009 with a minor in English, has won the Cave Canem Poetry Prize for Scratching the Ghost. This award is dedicated to the discovery of exceptional manuscripts by new African American poets. More details can be found on the Cave Canem website.

Holiday Help for the Elderly

Join VCU’s Staff Senate and the VCUHS House Calls Unit in making the holidays happier for elderly residents in the Richmond area. Names and wish lists of seniors in the community who are alone and in need this holiday season are provided to those interested in helping. Buy gifts yourself or simply donate to help individuals with specific needs. Sign up at the Division of Community Engagement.

7th Annual Leadership Conference

Register now for the Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute's HIGHER Ground Women's Leadership Conference on January 25th. Speakers include keynote speaker Sonia Aranza, Global Consultant and Executive Leadership Expert, VCU's Vice President for Diversity and Equity Wanda Mitchell and others. UROP Call for Posters

Encourage your students to present their research endeavors at VCU's annual Undergraduate Poster Symposium. Undergrads from every discipline are encouraged to present and attend. Presentations may be for completed research projects, completed papers, or research in progress. Projects involving creative work such as prose or poetry and artwork will be considered if they are part of a scholarly project undertaken by the student. The UROP blog has the details.

Nano Team Selected by NSF

Congratulations to Dr. Everett Carpenter in the VCU NANOCenter, whose ARPA-E team was selected to participate in the National Science Foundation’s innovation-corp program this spring. They are working to design new materials for permanent magnets that do not require rare-earth minerals. A summary of the innovation-corp program is on our blog.

VSSA Seeks Papers for Conference

The Virginia Social Science Association (VSSA) welcomes proposals from faculty members, graduate students and undergraduates for the Annual Conference, which will be held at VCU, April 5-6, 2013. To be considered for inclusion in the program, please submit the proposal by 5 p.m. on December 14, 2012. Full details can be found on our blog.

UROP Offers Student and Faculty Stipends

For the Summer of 2013, the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) will fund a limited number of undergraduate student fellowship awards for projects mentored by VCU faculty. Successful student applicants will receive a cash stipend of $1500. The student's faculty mentor will receive an additional $500 to defray expenses associated with the fellowship project. Poetry Collection Nominated for Award

Congratulations to Diana Woodcock, Assistant Professor of English at VCUQatar, whose first full-length poetry collection, Swaying on the Elephant's Shoulders, has been nominated for a Kate Tufts Discovery Award. It will also be the spring semester (2013) book selection for VCUQatar's school-wide reading program.

CHS Retired Faculty Luncheon

Retired faculty from the College will gather on December 17 in the ASPiRE dormitory on Grace Street for our annual luncheon. The luncheon will feature remarks by Dean Coleman followed by a tour of the ASPiRE facilty by Mary Slade. Current faculty who are teaching an ASPiRE course are also invited to attend. Please RSVP to Shirley McDaniel.

Congratulations to Liberal Studies for Early and Elementary Education student Holley Hankley who has co-authored a peer-reviewed article on service learning published in the Penn State Berks Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research. Her co-authors were VCU students Sabrina Hise and Yeimarie Lopez. Their article can be found at this link.
