Mass Comm Announces Inductees

Five media leaders will be inducted into the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame on Thursday, April 11, at the John Marshall Hotel in Richmond. Dorothy Abernathy, Steve Bassett, Don Belt, Doug Harwood, and Tom Silvestri will be recognized for their exceptional careers in journalism, public relations and advertising. Chair in Catholic Studies Symposium

The Second Annual Bishop Walter F. Sullivan Catholic Studies Symposium, “50 Years Since Vatican II: We’ve Only Just Begun”, features Dr. Anthony Padovano, Author, theologian and worldwide lecturer, Sister Simone Campbell, Social activist, and Bill Huebsch, educator and publisher on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 from 10:00 am – 3:30 pm in the Commons Theater. Participate in Safe Zone Training

Promote equality and inclusion for VCU's LGBT community by taking part in our Safe Zone workshop on Monday, March 11 from 2 - 4 pm in Harris Hall, room 3130. African American Studies Course

A Course in African American Studies features Dr. Francis Cress-Welsing, "Revisiting the Isis Papers and the Psychology of White Supremacy", March 8, 6:30 - 8:30 PM at the East District Family Resource Center, 2405 Jefferson Avenue. The course continues March 15. Read the complete schedule here.

Visiting Writers Series Continues

French Film Festival

The French Film Festival, co-sponsored by VCU and the University of Richmond, is coming up from March 21st to the 24th. All screenings (except for Master Class) take place at the Byrd Theater, 2908 West Cary Street. The complete Festival schedule is here.

CHS Student Awards Night

The CHS Annual Student Awards Night recognizes top students in the College and departmental award recipients. 7PM Monday, March 18, in the Commonwealth Ballrooms. Reception to follow. Contact Shirley McDaniel with questions.

Elske vP Smith Lecture

The Elske v.P. Smith Lecture “Red Flags and Other Storm Systems in American Politics” by Nelson Wikstrom, Professor Emeritus in the Wilder School, will be held on Tuesday, March 19 at 7:00 PM in the Richmond Salons. Reception to follow. More information.

NPR's Marketplace Features VCU Student

Mourya Abbareddy, a 21-year-old senior with a double major in economics and computer science was recently featured in a story on what employers are looking for in recent college grads. The story discusses the value to employers of a liberal arts education. Listen to the story on NPR's website.

Philosophy Lecture

Professor Joshua Gert from William & Mary will give a lecture on the philosophy of colors entitled, “Indeterminate Determinables,” followed by a question and answer period on Friday, March 22 from 3:30–5:00 pm in the Starke House, 915 W. Franklin St. Read more about Dr. Gert's background here.

Research Symposium on Imaging

Make plans to attend the CHS Research Symposium: "Cells to Landscapes – a Forum on Cross-Resolution Technologies" from 10 AM - 4 PM on March 29 in at ASPiRE, 835 W. Grace Street. Speakers from the Department of Physics, Biology, and the VCU Department of Anatomy will discuss cross-resolution technologies. The complete schedule is here.

Alumni Spotlight

“... I was the mascot, Rodney The Ram, during the basketball season of 1987-88. We made it to the quarterfinals of the NIT tournament that year and wound up losing to Connecticut in their hot practice gym, because the Hartford Civic Centre was already booked by “The Muppets!” Michael Williams (89/H&S) See a vintage picture of Rodney on our blog.

Student Spotlight

Meet Niya Flemmings, a senior with a double major in Psychology and Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies. She is also President of her sorority and manager of Break Point in the Student Commons. Niya will be featured in our spring fund-raising appeal to alumni and is also profiled on the undergraduate admissions website
