VCU Day at the Diamond

Our very own Steve Sullivan, Director of Finance, will throw out the first pitch – you don’t want to miss this! Special guest appearance from Shaka Smart. 2013 Health Benefits Open Enrollment

Open enrollment for health benefits and flexible spending accounts (FSAs) is May 1 - May 24, 2013. Enroll in a health plan and/or an FSA, change your health plan, add or remove family members or waive state health coverage during that time. Changes to your premiums, health benefits and FSAs will take effect on July 1, 2013. Use "Alex" to help you choose the best plan.

Online Course Development

The Center for Teaching Excellence is accepting applications for the the 2013-14 Online Course Development Initiative (OCDI). Faculty members interested in designing and teaching an online course can gain skills and support. You can also participate in strategic thinking about where online education best fits in the overall mix of educational opportunities. Scholarship Deadline Approaching

The Staff Senate just held its 9th annual Marquita Aguilar Walk-A-Thon to benefit student scholarships. The deadline for students to apply is May 1. Encourage your students who are full-time juniors or seniors with a 2.7 or above GPA and are employed at least 15 hours per week to fill out this application. You can still donate at this link.

MURP Plan-Off and Dinner

The Wilder School is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Master of Urban and Regional Planning and Bachelor of Urban and Regional Studies programs. To mark the occasion, they warmly invite you to the MURP Plan-Off and dinner on Friday, May 3, 2013. Details can be found here.

Faculty Awards Deadline Extended

The deadline to nominate someone for the President’s Awards for Staff and A&P Faculty has been extended to May 2, 2013. The awards recognize and honor staff and Administrative and Professional faculty for their outstanding performance, achievement and service excellence supporting VCU's Code of Ethics and the university’s strategic plan, Quest for Distinction. Nominate someone at this link.

Diploma Ceremony Schedule

Commencement is Saturday, May 11 at 10 am in the Richmond Coliseum. Our diploma ceremonies are on both Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11. The schedule of diploma ceremonies is at this link.

Staff Spotlight

Tammy Hynson Tammy is the Fiscal Administrator in the Dean's offce, and has worked for VCU for 19 years. Prior to joining VCU, Tammy served in the United States Marine Corps. She is also a loving aunt and an avid gardener.  Learn more about Tammy and her background at this link.

Faculty Spotlight

Judy VanSlyke Turk is retiring this year after a distinguished career as a professor and former Director of the School of Mass Communications. Judy is past president of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communications and of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (AEJMC), the largest association of journalism faculty and administrators in the United States. Mass Comm has more about Judy's impressive career.

Alumni Spotlight

Scott Newsham (BS Biology, 1979) spent 23 years on active duty in the Coast Guard, working primarily in the marine safety and environmental protection field. He spent 9 years at the Coast Guard Headquarters in a variety of positions. His final job was Chief of the Environmental Standards Division where he implemented programs authorized by the National Invasive Species Act, and represented the Coast Guard on the Federal Aquatic Nuisance Species Task Force.
