CHS Scholarships Available

Please help us spread the word to students about College of Humanities and Sciences scholarships. We offer more than 60 scholarships for students currently enrolled in the College, including numerous scholarships for students in specific majors. We also offer scholarships for veterans, for working adults, and for adults returning to school after being in the workforce. The application deadline is March 1. Our scholarship page has the details.

Year of Freedom Lecture

The next Lunchtime Lecture features Dr. John Kneebone on the topic "A Breakdown on the Underground Railroad: Petersburg, 1858" at noon on January 23 in the Commons, Forum Room. VCU News recently highlighted the series.

STS Lecturer: Nathaniel Comfort

Nathaniel Comfort, Ph.D., Associate Professor, History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University will speak on "From Medical Eugenics to Genomic Medicine: 100 years of Relieving Suffering and the Self‐Direction of Human Evolution." Thursday, January 24 at 4:00 pm in the Richmond Salons. More details.

University Level Initiatives

VCU held its mid-year retreat on January 16th. The two major goals of the retreat were: 1. to assess VCU's current/future status in meeting 2012-13 ULI objectives; and 2. to begin the planning for 2013-14 strategies to meet the five established University Level Initiatives. Visiting Writers Series

The Department of English Visiting Writers Series for January features author Melinda Moustakis (Bear Down, Bear North) and poet Paisley Rekdal (Animal Eye). January 24 at 7 pm in the Scott House. Open to the public. For more information contact Thom Didato.

VCU Homecoming February 1-2

The Alumni Association presents VCU Homecoming on February 1st and 2nd, including a homecoming concert, a GOLD social, and VCU's inaugural homecoming parade. Homecoming events are capped off when the Rams take on Fordham University, on Saturday, February 2 at 7:00 pm. View the complete schedule here.

Southern Film Festival February 8-9

Founded in 2010 in association with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Virginia Historical Society, the Southern Film Festival explores how the distinctiveness of the South has been portrayed onscreen. The Festival brings together films and those involved in their making with constructive commentary. A list of this year's films, times and locations.
 

VOWA Collegiate Writing Contest

The deadline for the Virginia Outdoor Writers Association undergraduate writing contest is February 7th. The theme for this year’s contest is to write about a memorable outdoor experience or special interest. The competition is open to any undergraduate student enrolled at a Virginia college or university. Full details can be found here.

Honors College Seeks Speakers

The Honors College invites faculty to participate in its Berglund Seminar Series. The purpose of the series is to expose honors students to a variety of topics and interests at the University. It is also a great opportunity for faculty to highlight their research, practice an upcoming presentation, or spread the word about a course they’ll be teaching. Details are on our blog.

Women's Leadership Conference

Time is running out to register for the Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute's HIGHER Ground Women's Leadership Conference on January 25th. Speakers include keynote speaker Sonia Aranza, Global Consultant and Executive Leadership Expert, VCU's Vice President for Diversity and Equity Wanda Mitchell and others. VSSA Deadline Approaching

You and your students have a few more days to submit proposals for papers and posters to be presented athe Virginia Social Science Association (VSSA) Annual Conference, April 5-6, 2013. The deadline is January 25th. Full details can be found on our blog

UROP Offers Stipends

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) is offering student fellowship awards for the summer of 2013 for projects mentored by VCU faculty. Successful applicants will receive a cash stipend of $1500. The faculty mentor will receive an additional $500 to defray expenses associated with the project. Apply by March 1st.

Faculty Spotlight

Dr. Peru Jena, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics, recently gave a talk at the 100th anniversary of the Indian Science Congress in Kolkata. The Prime Minster and the President of India were present at the inaugural ceremony of this congress. This made history as both these individuals have never appeared on the same forum together ... read more.

Student Spotlight

Brandy Edmonds is a Biology major with a minor in chemistry and a concentration in pre-dentistry. She also serves as the event co-chair for Relay for Life, works as a supplemental instruction leader at the Campus Learning Center and cheers for the women’s basketball team. The Honors College recently profiled Brandy on their website.

Alumni Spotlight

Bruce Gould remembers sending messages at VCU via Radio Shack Tandy computers that were like email/chat. “PCs were not readily accessible and we had to use punch cards with an operator.
