Moore Accountancy Update

Welcome to 2018

A belated happy new year to you all and best wishes for a successful and fun filled 2018.

The team have had a busy few weeks back (as always!) with the SATR deadline of 31/01/18 fast approaching, so apologies if we have not been able to respond to emails as swiftly as usual.

Regular service resumes next week!

New Telephone Number

For many years we have used our mobile as our main point of contact but now that the team has grown and at least one member is generally in the office from 9-4 every day we have decided to get a new separate landline.
Please use 0161 738 1110 going forward. Our emails and website will be updated to reflect this number but please save it down on your phone to ensure that your phone calls are answered promptly.

Our current blog post talks about things to think about before the end of the tax year from a personal tax perspective.
Points we cover include:
  • ISA Allowances
  • Pension Planning
  • Gifts Out Of Surplus Income
Have a read and get in touch for further advice.

Note that we can not provide specific financial advice but can guide you to a pool of IFAs (independent financial advisors) if you do not already have one.

31/01/18    SATR 16/17 filing and payment deadline, and 50% payment on account of 2017/18 tax

01/02/18   Corporation tax payment for companies with year ends to 30/04/17

01/03/18   Corporation tax payment for companies with year ends to 31/05/17

HMRC halts thousands of scam text messages

HMRC will never contact customers who are due a tax refund by text message or by email.

They began a pilot in April 2017 to combat these messages and since then have seen a 90% reduction in customer reports about spoof text messages.
For more information on their "Take Five To Stop Fraud" week click here.

On 15/01/18 Carillion Plc entered into insolvency.
All companies in the group will continue to operate until further notice but the court have appointed the Official Receiver as liquidator.

If you or any of your suppliers and creditors have been affected by this then visit this HMRC link for extra guidance and support or this PWC link for more information.

HMRC SATR Dodgy Excuses
It's Friday, so here is an amusing roundup of some recent excuses HMRC have had for not completing Self Assessment Returns:
  • The ex-wife had left his tax return upstairs, but as he suffered from vertigo he could not go up to retrieve it.
  • The wife had been seeing aliens and would not let him enter the house
  • They had spilt coffee on the paperwork
  • His business did not really do anything
These were not seen as reasonable by HMRC and probably therefore suffered the £100 late filing penalty.....
