A Strategic Plan for Philadelphia

On September 8th at our first ever World Heritage City Solidarity Day Celebration we unveiled our strategic plan for how Philadelphia will utilize its unique status as a World Heritage City - the first in the United States! Philly is uniquely positioned to take advantage of many new opportunities for economic growth, international relationships, historic preservation, and increased tourism. The strategic plan summarizes a series of bold aspirations that come with our new status. This plan is for all Philadelphians!

Dear Global Philadelphian:

The Fall season is in full swing and that means that there is an amazing amount of fascinating things to see do and learn from in Philadelphia.  In the past few days alone, the newly launched Perry World House at UPenn has seen Ambassadors from the four corners of the world, statesmen and thought leaders present on the current state of our complex world. At the Constitution Center John Lewis received the 2016 Philadelphia Liberty Medal and with our partner PA Humanities Council, 100 years of Pulitzer Prize winning journalism was recognized. All this whilst 18 International Trade representatives for PA from the world have been visiting the region meeting with prospects for global business.  Two days worth of events, meetings and valuable networking and I am sure not all are mentioned here.

Philadelphia is increasingly on the radar as a global city. Here at the association we have been thinking about this with respect to language and how our work is represented.
We are thrilled to share with you all that the Sam Katz/David Brownlee film presenting Philadelphia as a World Heritage City is now available in Spanish and Chinese translation. We hope to on-ramp more languages for the film and other materials as we access the needed funding and we are thankful to MTM LinguaSoft for their partnership.

Global Philadelphia Association is born of collaboration. To this end we present a Women's International Networking (WIN) event on October 13 as a joint venture with The Walnut Club and the German American Chamber of Commerce. Join us for WIN to hear from the SAP Marketing team, to get head shots and learn more about cross cultural communications.

Finally we invite you to share with us any news that you would like to be shared among our growing number of collaborators. Our reach is now 18,000 plus globally qualified names, our newsletter is issued the 20th of every month.

We look forward to working with you as Philadelphia's global presence is amplified.

Best Wishes

There we unveiled the World Heritage Strategic Plan. The Plan enumerates three to four action items for each of the seven sectors: Neighborhood & Community Development, History & Preservation, International Relations, Education, Tourism & Hospitality, Arts & Culture, and Business & Nonprofit Organizations. We are grateful to our sponsors, partners and GPA members who made this evening possible.

Ciao Philadelphia

I am proud to announce that the Consulate General of Italy - in partnership with area civic, academic, cultural and business leaders - is launching the third edition of the Italian cultural month Ciao Philadelphia in October 2016 after the success of  its previous editions in 2015 and 2014. Ciao Philadelphia is a month-long series of more than 70 events that highlight the contributions of Italians and Italian Americans to Greater Philadelphia, the Delaware valley and, indeed, the world.

Greater Philadelphia boasts one of the largest, and most accomplished, Italian-American communities in the United States. The birthplace of the United States of America, Philadelphia is a city deeply connected to Italian values and the Italian way of  life, exemplified by the rich universities, museums, art centers, and neighborhoods and contributions of Italian Heritage.

Daily events throughout October include opera, concerts, film screenings, food celebrations, exhibits, Italian race cars, performances and lectures, to name a few.

Major highlights this year as well as last year are the tours uniquely created for Ciao Philadelphia. From the historical tours at Independence Hall and Union League to the cultural tours at the PMA and PAFA, Ciao Philadelphia highlights the international nature of the region established through the influence of its Italian and Italian American community.

Every landmark institution of the region with an Italian influence as well as all major universities are included. Ciao Philadelphia is a way to appreciate the Italian Cultural Heritage and connect the region with contemporary Italy, opening doors for even more economic and academic exchanges. The extensive media coverage received in Italy thorough Ciao Philadelphia helps to promote awareness about new opportunities in and with the Greater Philadelphia region.

Andrea Canepari, LL.M.
