September | Yarnton Nurseries Garden & Shopping Village
Some easy things you can do that will make a big difference come Spring.
The summer holidays have been and gone in a flash, and as the kids head back to school we have lots of items in store, and tips and tricks on ways to to look after your garden this Autumn that will ensure it's still looking it's best come Spring time!
Feed your lawn.
As Autumn arrives it's the perfect time to take care of your lawn. The difference between a 'so-so' lawn and a truly beautiful lawn, both now and next Spring, is two Autumn feedings.
Feeding in early September and again 6-8 weeks later helps your lawn begin rebuilding grass roots that were damaged during the hot, dry summer. Don't let the tree leaves smother your grass.
Fallen tree leaves will not insulate your lawn during the Winter. In fact, they can block vital sunlight and thin your grass. So make sure you use a rake and add the leaves to your compost.

Will we get an Indian Summer?

The conditions in early Autumn are often still summery, but Autumn is looming in the landscape.
Many plants produce seeds, berries, and conkers start falling from the tress too. Seasonal migrants are starting to leave or arrive in our gardens. Those species that share our gardens year round though are seeing their thoughts turn to the coming cold Winter months.
A few odd jobs you could be getting on with this month are remember to leave some seed heads to provide food and shelter for wildlife...

Autumn is all about colour.
Autumn is a very colourful time of the year.
In the garden, after the summer bedding has all gone, you can begin to put in your winter pansies and winter violas which will flower right through the season and into spring time. These are a great source of colour.
Other plants that are pleasant at this time of year are chrysanthemums, which flower right through until the end of November. They are fully hardy so they will come back for another year too.

Congratulations, we will email you shortly regarding your prize!

Last month's winner was Sarah Kidney :
"Our introduction to Yarnton Garden Centre was about 30 years ago when we first moved to the area. We were looking for, and eventually bought, a Mountfield Mower from you. We also discovered a very small cafe with lovely coffee and cakes. What a difference at Yarnton since those days. Thankfully a much larger restaurant but still the same good selection of plants that are well looked after and reasonably priced.

We look forward to our Friday visits to see what changes have been made and often to meet up with friends for a chat in the restaurant."
