CDSA-ACÉH March 2020 Updates

Late last week the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences formally announced that they would not be hosting an in-person Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences at Western University this year. In response to this announcement, the CDSA-ACÉH Executive Board met and reached the following decisions:

CANCELLED: CDSA-ACÉH 2020 Conference

The CDSA-ACÉH Executive Board has made the difficult decision to formally cancel our 2020 conference. This means our association will not be participating in the Federation’s proposed “virtual” Congress.

Our decision was informed by a number of factors related to the COVID-19 pandemic and widespread uncertainty. With only two months to prepare and limited resources, we would be unable to host a fully accessible online conference, and believe that this conflicts with our association’s fundamental principles. We also recognize our members’ needs to prioritize their own health and safety, alongside increased demands that come with courses moving online and other unexpected social and economic changes.
We understand that this may come as a major disappointment to our membership who have been looking forward to reconnecting in the spring and working hard preparing their presentations. However we feel this decision is necessary to allow our association to move forward responsibly and sustainably.

Recognizing Accepted Presenters

We would like to formally thank everyone who applied to present at our conference this year, along with our abstract adjudicators. In recognition of this work, either a draft schedule of our planned in-person conference or a list of accepted presentations will be posted on our website in the near future. Those who wish include accepted CDSA-ACÉH 2020 conference presentations on their CVs may reference the following formatting and citation suggestions put forward by the American Psychological Association (APA) and Modern Language Association (MLA)

Refunds: Congress Fees

Refund deadline: April 30, 2020

Those who have already registered for our conference and/or Congress 2020 are eligible for the full reimbursement of both Congress registration fees and CDSA-ACÉH membership fees. Refund requests will be processed by Congress and must be sent to by April 30, 2020

Membership Fees

Refund deadline: April 30, 2020

Membership fees represent a critical income source for our small organization. Consequently, we are asking that those who have already registered for Congress and who are willing and able consider requesting that only their Congress registration fees be reimbursed (as opposed to both their Congress registration and association membership fees being reimbursed).

Those who choose to have their membership fees reimbursed will no longer be considered active members of CDSA-ACÉH, and will be ineligible to vote at our Annual General Meeting (AGM), which will be held online in coming months (date TBA).

Those who have not yet registered for this year’s conference at Congress but who wish to become CDSA-ACÉH members may pay this year’s membership fees using our website’s PayPal feature. This “pay what you can” option has a suggested $20 fee. Please visit our website to learn more about CDSA-ACÉH membership fees and access our PayPal page.

Annual General Meeting (AGM)

As required by our association’s bylaws, we will be organizing an online AGM later this summer (date TBA). In order to secure the opportunity to participate - including the chance to perform important service work by joining next year’s Executive Board - please ensure your membership fees are paid before the AGM. Stay tuned for more information.

Deadline Extension: Tanis Doe Nominations

New deadline: April 10, 2020

In recognition of extenuating circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have decided to extend the deadline for nominations for both the English and French streams of the Tanis Doe Award to April 10th, 2020.

Winners of the 2020 Tanis Doe Award will be recognized at both this year’s and next year's AGMs, and will have both their association membership and Congress registration fees covered for Congress 2021 in Edmonton, AB.

For more information about the Tanis Doe Award and nomination process, please visit our website.

Student Paper Competition

Unfortunately the Executive Board has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Student Paper Competition. We encourage students who were preparing to submit to save their papers for next year’s competition.

We are still accepting sponsorships at this time to help cover accessibility costs related to hosting an online AGM, as well as other incidental costs from this year (e.g. translation fees).  Please stay tuned for more information about how sponsorship rewards will be transferred to next year's conference.

Please e-mail with further questions and concerns. We are anticipating a higher volume of questions than usual in response to these updates.

Congress-specific inquiries may be directed to the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences at Further contact information for the Federation may be found on the Congress 2020 website.
