A+W-NZ and SGA Collaborate on Building Education

Strachan Group Associates (SGA) and A+W-NZ both firmly believe in providing construction education for students, architectural graduates and architects. You may all be familiar with the excellent work Dave Strachan has carried out as Adjuct Professor at Unitec until recently, guiding students through a prefabrication process and providing completed locatable buildings to community groups. With the relocation of SGA to Rossmay Terrace in Kingsland, they have developed their own workshop facilities to create a design-build heaven, with Crate Building Innovation
A+W-NZ are very proud to partner with SGA on one of their upcoming projects, for a project for the Motu Kaikoura Trust, replacing their research and study building destroyed by arson in 2013. The building, designed by SGA, will be prefabricated at the SGA and Crate workshops in Kingsland and barged to Kaikoura Island (off Great Barrier Island) for assembly.

This course is being offered to architectural graduates and Registered Architects, to gain confidence and further knowledge on a construction site. While the various schools of architecture and Spatial Design  provide building education to students, opportunities are less often available to architectural graduates and architects, and SGA and A+W-NZ aim to fill that gap.

The timeline for the project is projected for April-May 2017, with initial setup meetings from late January 2017.

If you are keen for more information on this amazing opportunity, contact us at architecturewomen@gmail.com.

Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year from A+W-NZ!

As we head into the summer holiday period, we wish you all a safe (and sane!) summer break. 2016 has been another busy and fruitful year for A+W-NZ, with many events and achievements.  A+W-NZ operate across four platforms: Events, Networks, Research and Policy, and before the year closes into holiday madness, we would like to recap on our year;

Here is a quick summary of the Events we held;
A+W-NZ Auckland:  A+W-NZ @ Auckland Build Expo 2016, Local Women Speak, Ra Waiata, The Common: Housing Our Communities, A+W-NZ Timeline @ The Silos Re-Visited, held the first A+W-NZ Writing Award, and we hosted  Lunch with Lene Tranberg, Rachel Bevan, and Spektrum Arkitekter.
A+W-NZ Wellington:     A+W-NZ TOAST Series,  A+W-NZ Express Series
A+W-NZ Christchurch:   Housing & Ideas Panel
A+W-NZ Taranaki:    Two Site visits to A+W-NZ member projects, one Lunch and one Breakfast, with a fast-growing membership in the Taranaki region.

Our Networks continue to grow;
A+W-NZ Database - 656 members
A+W-NZ Facebook - 2116 followers
A+W-NZ Twitter - 1383 followers
A+W-NZ Instagram - 609 followers

Our Research is ongoing, with the A+W-NZ Timeline currently being added to by original contributors Marianne Calvelo, Joy Roxas and Lynda Simmons. Dr Lucy Treep and Dr Deidre Brown have also contributed this year to the ongoing additions to the Timeline. Articles continue to be added to the website page throughout the year.

Part of the research we do includes ideas for changes in Policy, and ongoing survey work in the areas of equity in the workplace will help contribute tot he NZIA/IPENZ initiatives in this area. Watch our website for survey results to be published soon.

And in 2016 we had a slight 'change of guard' - Co-Founder and Co-Chair Megan Rule stepped down, as did Co-Founder and Secretary Julie Wilson. Current roles for the core team are Lynda Simmons continuing as Chair, Nicole Allen continuing as Treasurer, and Elisapeta Heta as Secretary. Portfolio Leaders were established, with Sukshma Paranjpe (Events), Lauren Speer (Networks), Rebecca Green (Research) and Kitty Fan (Policy) taking these positions. You can find more details about the great people involved in A+W-NZ on the 'About' page of the website.

We hope 2017 is a happy and rewarding one, already our calendar is full with the SGA / A+W-NZ Building Collaboration and the A+W-NZ Awards 2017. It's going to be a great one.
Happy and safe holidays, everyone.

Happy Holidays!
