Stewart's Stewings
To be honest, we've been trying to take a little break. It's hard. There is so much work to do. The temptation is to keep at it. To press on, toward the prize, whatever that might be. But if you remember back to the first chapter of Genesis, God worked pretty hard for six days, and then God rested. A whole day. Some of us do that better than others. Some of us need help resting. So we're trying.

Last week Don got away for a week with his family to the beach. This week I'm blessed to be with my family in the Great Smoky Mountains. We all got tested, and I believe this is the last time we'll be able to do this for a while. This is our 'Thanksgiving.' As you can see from the picture above, God is clearly in control. We are above the clouds up here, and there is peace and joy in creation.

We all need help to rest. So please be mindful of that these days. Please find a way to find some time 'away.' That means different things to different people. Try to do something different! Encourage one another to take it easy from time to time. Sometimes even God has a hard time breaking through the noise. But have no fear, God keeps showing up.

So tomorrow, Don will be back to celebrate Communion outside at 9:00 am in the garden. Please come with a mask. At 10:30am, Don will host coffee hour on Zoom. See the link below.

This is a chance for you to see worship in two different ways! The Delaware-Maryland Synod have produced worship for tomorrow. I think it will be powerful. The service is live at 10:00 am or you can watch it anytime here. The Episcopal Diocese of Maryland will have worship at 11:00 am. Bishop Sutton will be preaching. Watch online here.

I'd love to hear your thoughts about worship! I'll be back next week for Reformation Sunday. Then you'll be hearing more about our Stewardship Campaign and our All Saints' Service. I'm so grateful for our community, for you, for our hard work together, and for some time away. Thank you!

Love in Christ,

All Saints Pictures
During our Sunday service on November 1, we would like to do a special video montage with pictures of all of the saints of our lives that we love but see no longer. Please email your pictures to Pastor Stewart with the names of each person you would like to share with the wider community. Please email these as soon as possible so that we can get going on this project which will take some significant time to prepare. The hard deadline for these submissions must be Sunday, October 25.

Donations Needed

Over one half of our neighbors are now not able to pay their bills. While some expenses are down for folks, others are up, and income is down. The CARES Food Pantry is in desperate need. In addition to the regular needs, they need: spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, cooking oil, coffee, and canned vegetables other than the usual corn and peas! Please bring your donation to the church any time and leave it at the door under the covered ramp entrance.

They also have a new Amazon Wish List so you and purchase online and have donations sent directly to the pantry! They also need computer speakers for folks in the job assistance center. If you have some sitting around, bring them to the church.

Prayer for our Country

Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the election of officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes. Amen.

Annual Meeting & Nominations

The Church Council has set the Annual Meeting for Sunday November 8, 2020 on Zoom following our regular 10:30 am worship.

We will elect three new Council members to three year terms. Those eligible for election to the Church Council are confirmed members of this congregation who are 16 years of age or older who, during the preceding year, have received Holy Communion in this Congregation and have been faithful in corporate worship, unless for good cause prevented, and in working, praying and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God.

Pastor Stewart has appointed the following members of the Nominating Committee: Justin Dowding, John McConnell, Kari Rudgers, Margaret Dowding, Harold Hardinger, and Barbara Herron. If you have questions about serving, would like to be nominated or nominate someone else, please
email Justin or speak to any member of the committee.

Pastor Stewart will be co-facilitating the October 28 discussion on Dear Church: A Love Letter from a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the US. If you would like a copy, they will be available in the office for $15. Contact Pastor Stewart if you are interested in joining the online conversation with our brothers and sisters from the CLAIM churches of Baltimore.
Our own Carolyn Surrick and Ronn McFarlane were featured in the midday concert series at the Church of the Epiphany in Washington, DC.
Take a little while to listen to this amazing concert, or leave it playing in the background as you go about your work.

The Delaware-Maryland Synod of the ELCA broadcasts at 10:00 am here on this website. The Episcopal Diocese of Maryland worships virtually at 11:00am at the Cathedral of the Incarnation. All services are cast on this worship page. Watch Washington National Cathedral's worship here.

Be Counted!

Please take a few minutes to complete the 2020 Census
if you have not already do so. It's an easy process
online here.

Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favor and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
