Pastoral Notes

Dear Friends,

I'm sad to report the death of Frances Joan (Kenealy) Merrill on January 1, 2021. After Holy Comforter moved to Nativity, you will remember Joan and her husband Jack were not shy about claiming the very front pew on the lectern side of the church. They were joyful leaders of our extended time of the Peace, always greeting old friends and strangers alike with a warm smile and heartfelt handshake. Jack died in February of 2018. Sadly their son Tom died in April of 2019. You may find Joan's obituary online here. Please keep Joan's children Susan and Steve in your prayers as they navigate a family death during this pandemic time. Services are pending.

Rest eternal grant unto her, O Lord.
And let light perpetual shine up her.
May her soul, and the souls of all the departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

The Church office will be closed for in person visits for the month of January. If you need something from the office, please call or email us to make arrangements. Carolyn and I will be here regularly, but we want to be making the wisest decisions for all involved. If you do not get one of us on the phone, please do leave a message. We get those on our email, and we'll respond as soon as possible. If you have donations for the food pantry, just leave them on the ramp entrance, and we'll get them delivered.

Pastor Don preaches tomorrow, a sermon entitled "Middle School Jesus." I can' wait to hear it. You know, it's about the time Jesus gets lost from his parents but is really just teaching in the Temple. Great music will be shared as well, "We Three Kings" by our very own Bell Choir. Don't be late or you'll miss us!.

I look forward to seeing you in church tomorrow on Zoom as we remember Joan and her family. We will also raise up others in our community who have been recently diagnosed with COVID-19. Indeed this virus has hit close to home, my friends. Please stay safe.

The work of Christmas has only just begun...

P.S. I'd like to restart our email prayer chain. If you feel called to intercessory prayer for members and friends, please email me

Childhood Jesus

These are two of the beautiful 1955 Rowan LeCompte windows in our bell tower that depict the life of Jesus. The first is "The Presentation." This one is unique in the use of the white opalescent glass in the figure of Simeon. It really makes him pop out from the rest of the window.

The window is a depiction of Simeon holing high the baby Jesus in the presentation at the temple. Mary and Joseph are looking on as Simeon says the words in the text, “Lord, Let Now Thy Servant Depart In Peace.”

This second window is called "Young Preacher." These windows are just a bit muted in their color, giving the baptistry a beautiful moody light. The use of horizontal lines in the background creates an interesting texture in the upper half of the window. This window, along with its neighbor, the Presentation window, have warmer reds and yellows as the dominant colors. The window is a depiction of 12 year-old Jesus preaching in the temple with elders and a scribe. A small piece of purple glass gives just a hint that one of the figures is writing something.

See pictures of all our windows by the artist here.
