GovHack:
Because we're better together.

Hey <<First Name>>! 😎👏

It's incredible what can happen when talented teams of passionate people get together for a purpose, and we're proud to have the opportunity to bring people together: but what makes GovHack special is you.

A team is far more than the sum of its parts: by joining together with the intention to innovate and create, you're able to bounce ideas and spark new ones, and make something extraordinary - and you're bound to make new friendships, learn new things along the way.

We can't wait to see what amazing ideas are sparked during GovHack Weekend (28-30 July 2017). If you'd like to be a part of it, get in touch - pre-registrations are open now, Connections event dates are available for ACT, QLD, SA and VIC and we're also on the lookout for volunteers, sponsors and mentors to help us make GovHack 2017 bigger and better than ever.

iHero: facial recognition web app showcases the power of open data

Western Australian team Hack to the Future's iHero app is an inspiring example of how out-of-the-box thinking can combine with the potential of open data to create something entirely new! iHero scanned national and state archives of WW1 photos, helping users to find long-forgotten photos of the men and women who served our country.

Users uploaded photos, and the app utilised facial-recognition technology to scan archived images, and work out which faces were a match.

The use of cutting-edge facial matching technology to identify long-lost photos that could be shared with history buffs and even the servicepeople's friends and families, is both innovative and heart-warming. It's also remarkable when you think how unimaginable this process would have been when the photos were taken a century ago - definitely the stuff of science fiction!

Blair's GovHack story
"a story of my search for purpose and a way to give back"

Our very own Blair Hudson, has written an awesome piece at Medium.com about his GovHack story: first as a participant, and now as the GovHack Partnerships Chief. If you'd like to know more about what it's like to be part of GovHack, both on the ground and behind the scenes, then check it out here!
