Education Assistance:
Supporting Schooling Opportunities For Disadvantaged Children
View this email in your browser

Hi <<First Name>>,

Education assistance breaks down barriers to education for disadvantaged children and youth. This assistance helps with books, school supplies, school bags and uniforms. Sometimes the children get bicycles and even some support for school fees. This lets children know that we care about them and their future. We want every child to have the opportunity to excel.

This month we focus on: Supporting Schooling Opportunities For Disadvantaged Children

2022 Education Assistance  Assessment

With the recent economic development in Vietnam, many things have improved. However, in rural areas, there are still many households in difficult circumstances. In our recent assessments we have found  most disadvantaged households are households in poverty who also are bearing the effects of divorce, or have family members with serious illnesses with high treatment costs. Children are the most vulnerable in these situations. YWAM Mercy Vietnam wants everyone to benefit from rising incomes and modernization and we know education is a big part of seeing that happen.

Visiting communities allows us to assess each family's needs and see the real situation in households

This year, YWAM Mercy/SSCD and local leaders surveyed households in difficult circumstances directly to know the real needs of the children. More than 350 children in YWAM's operating areas have already been surveyed and we will supply them with  the things they need to help them stay in school.

Thuong's (12) family has four children. Her father has heart valve damage and cirrhosis of the liver. Every month, the family needs to buy medicine treat his disease. Her mother also has a breast tumor. Thuong's family only raises enough rice to eat for eight months every year. She and her siblings are trying their best to study and support their family by helping with housework. We hope that with new school supplies, Thuong will have a big motivation to study well in the new school year .

Disadvantaged Children Need Extra Care and Attention
Many families in Vietnam are still facing financial challenges and struggle to provide the required educational supplies. There is often not enough money for food let alone these supplies. However, school supplies are required for attending school, leaving the children at-risk of dropping out. Your support will provide the children with learning equipment such as pens, pencils, notebooks, rulers, school bags and such. In some cases, students receive uniforms, school fees or bicycles as well.
Children who need uniforms were measured so that they can receive a uniform that fits perfectly.
This single father is raising two daughters alone after a divorce.
Here he is taking his daughters to be measured for a school uniform.
Some larger families in particular struggle to provide the needed school supplies for their children.
Children are excited to attend school. Education is a proven route to exit poverty.

Ngoc's (10) parents divorced three years ago after his father suffered from epilepsy, which caused brain damage, and was no longer able to work. Now, Ngoc and his father live with his grandparents who are nearly 70 years old. His grandparents must work to earn money to support the whole family. Every year, the family struggles to even buy used books but this year Ngoc hopes that the through YWAM Mercy's Education Assistance program, he will get a new set of textbooks.

Special Thanks to Our Organizational Sponsors
This year, APAL International Company has joined with YWAM Mercy/SSCD in supporting our Education Assistance effort. They have provided $1,000 USD to help more than 50 disadvantaged children have the opportunity to continue going to school. We would like to thank APAL and all of our donors for creating learning opportunities to change the quality of life in impoverished areas of Vietnam.

And once again, TOC H Australia conducted a Bird-a-thon and raised over $2000 AUD to help over 66 children stay in school this year. Many thanks to all the birders who went out and spotted 28 species of birds, to those who sponsored them in this effort to the benefit of the children, and to TOC H for organizing this event.
We are over 50% of the way to our goal!
