Newsletter #5 Autumn 2012

Dear <<First Name>>,

The main focus in this newsletter is about becoming a better sailor and enjoying time on the water.

Next year my aim is to get all of the 130 Lasers in the dinghy park at Quen Mary out sailing!

It's not just about racing, but getting out on the water and enjoying the sport that we all love. I'll be sending out a survey in the New Year to find out how I can improve your Laser sailing experience at Queen Mary. This will help me plan the support needed to help you make the most of your Laser. So if you don't feel confident about racing, you need a hand launching and recovering or your boat needs some repairs and you don't know how to fix it, or for any other reason, drop me an email at and help me to help you. After all, it is your fleet.

Practice sessions

September saw our first informal practice session. Eight of us turned up and had a good light airs session roll tacking and gybing with expert advice from Tony Woods. Everyone I spoke to really appreciated the help from Tony so I'd like to offer a big 'Thank You' to him for giving up his time to help the rest of us get a little better. You can see some video footage of Tony demonstrating a roll tack on our website here

Unfortunately I was away for the October date and hadn't sent out an email reminder, my apologies.

However the next session is scheduled for Saturday 3 November. For further details see here

Pro Coaching

As part of the training program for the fleet there will be an Autumn Pro-coaching day where we hire a professional Laser coach to come to Queen Mary and give us a day's race training. The price for the day will be £25-30 per boat. Costs will be fixed once I have final numbers.  Depending on numbers I will arrange either one or two coaches. We will be using the UKLA coaches arranged by Jon Emmett.

This Autumn there is a choice of two potential dates, Saturday 17 November or Saturday 24 November. Whichever gets the most votes becomes the date that it will take place. It's your fleet and your training so if you want to take part please place your vote. Voting will close midnight Wednesday 17 October.  You need to 'log in' to be able to vote, use the details that I sent you when the website launched. To vote go to this page on the website

Saturday Club

This Saturday sees another Saturday Club. This is a great opportunity to practise or enjoy sailing in company. Sailing a Laser doesn't have to always be about racing. If you lack confidence in a racing fleet or don't enjoy Sunday racing then come down and enjoy the fresh air and exercise sailing your boat. There are only four more left this year so make the most of them while the water temperature is still OK.
