June 2018

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners,

Heather and I just returned from a week in the jungle of Suriname seeing God's work among the Wayana Amerindians.
We met the former witch-doctor whose conversion decades ago brought his tribe out of fear, suspicion and death into the hope and life that comes through Jesus.
Last century, a Wayana warrior named Apetina set out in search of a place down river to set up a new village--a place that had great arrow making wood. Little did he know that God was planning arrows for His own quiver.   Soon after the new village was established and named “Apetina”, missionary Walt Jackson came to share the good news of Jesus with them. Many believed and now generations later they are the polished shafts.
Isaiah 49:2 says “In the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft.” Praise God for His saving work among the Wayana Indians. What a privilege it was for us to meet some of these “polished shafts.”
Our hosts in the jungle were Marco and Marjolein Schuurmans, Dutch missionary colleagues with World Team who work among the Wayana.  Suriname's official language is Dutch, so that's advantageous for the Schuurmans.  They split their time between Apetina and the village of Lawa.
Lawa is on the river dividing Suriname from French Guiana, so those Wayana children are educated in French.  On Sunday, Sean preached in French and his translator put his sermon into Wayana.  The church leaders there asked if the MEBSH in Haiti could come to Lawa to conduct a Bible conference for the youth and community leaders.  When I shared this with the MEBSH president last week he was very interested. First we pray!
Back row: Gurudatt and Rakesh.  Front row: Pastor Danny, Pastor Errol, Sean.
Our Suriname trip started with ministry in the capital city in partnership with two pastors from Trinidad (Danny and Errol) who preached three times and shared the Lord with a group of ladies at a discovery Bible study and four received Christ that night!
The UNIE church association asked me to preach at their convention at a camp outside the capital.  My World Team colleague, Gurudatt Shiwdat, translated into the Surinamese creole called Saranan Tango.  Heather and I had many wonderful conversations with the brothers and sisters in Christ there and an encouraging time with our co-workers in the Gospel.
Meanwhile, Erik, Joey and Ellie got to spend a week with their grandparents in Wisconsin--chopping wood, kayaking, fishing, and visiting family.  After leaving Suriname, Heather joined the kids in the US. Ian stayed in Haiti because he didn't want to leave his home a month early.  He and Sean fly to the US next week to join the family.
What better way to celebrate 20 years of marriage, than to go on a missions trip to the city and jungles of Suriname. We thank God for the privilege and opportunity.
As we mentioned in our last newsletter, I was also in Trinidad in April for our World Team America's leaders' meeting.  I flew in a few days early so that Pastor Varma and I could team teach a seminar on the aspects of honor and shame in the Bible and culture.  We showed from Scripture how Jesus provides everything that a guilty, ashamed and vulnerable person needs.  He is truly the only Savior!
This is the ECWI church in Sangre Grande Trinidad, where I preached in April.  World Team's presence in Trinidad & Tobago and in Suriname is two-fold:  (1) to bring the Gospel to groups still living in spiritual darkness; (2) to train and support local church and denominational leadership.  Pray for a powerful work of God's Spirit in these two multi-ethnic, multi-religious countries.
But our main role is still in Haiti and we don't anticipate that changing anytime soon.  With my colleague and friend, Volker, having to move his family back to Germany, the leadership team at the Bible school is training a young new leader (Benjamin, far left) to take up some of what Volker used to do.  This is always our goal as missionaries, to teach, train, equip and release the local people to do fruitful ministry.  However, within God's family, there are always open doors for partnership.
