What's Up with the Christensen's in Haiti?
September 2018

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners,

Thank you for your prayers for our summer travels.  We certainly ate a lot of ice cream and put on a few pounds--as countless Haitians have pointed out to us since we got back!  We drove over 6000 miles and slept in 29 different beds, so it's nice to be back in our Haitian home.  We certainly enjoyed reconnecting with family and friends, some of whom we hadn't seen in 20 years.
Of course our big family news is leaving Ian at college a few days before we flew back to Haiti.  CIU has changed a lot since Heather and I got engaged there 21 years ago, but we were very encouraged by the state and direction of the school and we feel that we are leaving our son in good hands.  Ian has already made a lot of friends and he loves his classes and professors.  He also earned 30 credits from CLEP tests which officially makes him a sophomore already!
Another highlight of our summer was hosting our friend Joab Telusma who traveled with us from Wisconsin to South Carolina back to Wisconsin and then to Florida and Haiti.  It was his first time out of Haiti and it certainly expanded his horizons.  Joab and his brother and sister effectively grew up with our kids, teaching each other Creole and English and lots of cultural lessons.
I had several speaking opportunities this summer--presenting at several supporting churches in Ohio and Wisconsin and serving as the evening speaker for a family camp at Pinebrook Bible Conference in Pennsylvania where I spoke on the theme of Honor vs. Shame in the Bible, the Gospel, cultures and in our personal lives.  This was the first time I presented the topic to non-missionaries and it was well received.

Our 2nd and 4th year FTEL students start back up this coming Monday.  However, I will be teaching our 31 residential students The Gospel of John, John's Letters and Ecclesiology Made Simple. I haven't taught these pastors yet, even though they're finishing their two-year program this fall.  I won't start until October 10th because I have another World Team trip coming up next week!
I will travel to Germany to spend a few days with my deeply missed colleague, Volker Schnuell, who is now teaching at Brake Bibelschule.  I will visit his mission, DMG, headquarters and Brake (pronounced brahkuh), both of which have sent a lot of missionaries with World Team.  I'll also have a few days with our former German neighbors, the Seel's, who were missionaries here for 5 years.  In between, I have WT global leadership meetings in Asia like I did two years ago when Hurricane Matthew took the roof off our house.  Heather is praying for no repeats!
Heather and the kids have plunged back into homeschooling.  Ellie (7th) is being homeschooled for the first time.  Joey (9/10th) is taking Biology and Algebra 2 from Cite Lumiere Christian School and doing the rest with Mom.  Erik (11th) is pressing on with ten consecutive years of homeschool and is praying for post-high school direction.  Such is the phase that our family is now in.  Pray for Heather as she shoulders most of these responsibilities.
Prayer and Praise
  • We praise God for new support from churches and individuals.  We are still well below our budgeted need, but God is providing!
  • Pray for Sean's upcoming trip to Europe and Asia that God will guide his conversations and his contributions at the World Team meetings.  Also for his safety.
  • Pray for Heather and the kids as they remain in Haiti during an active hurricane season.  Also for Ian who looks to be affected by Hurricane Florence in South Carolina.
  • Pray for the 85 students in the IBL-R, FTEL 2 and FTEL 4 this fall as they manage life obligations during their studies.
  • Pray for the Bible School's financial needs. All colleges rely on external donations to function, the IBL is no exception.  God is faithful.
"The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world" (John 1:9, referring to Jesus)

With love and gratitude,

Sean, Heather, Ian, Erik, Joey and Ellie Christensen
