Our Home Assignment Has Begun!
July 2020

Heather, Joey and Ellie flew to the US on June 2

Dear Family and Friends,

If you had told me a few months ago that soon people would be required to wear a mask to go into a bank, I would have just shook my head.  Everyone is dealing with inconveniences and uncertainties.  I've spoken with more than a few people who say, "I don't understand what God is doing."

Ancient wisdom offers perspective on today's trials.  In 713 B.C., Hezekiah the king of Judah recovered from a severe illness. Afterwards, he wrote a poem that is recorded in the book of the prophet Isaiah.  He wrote:

"But what can I say? He has spoken to me, and he himself has done this. I will walk humbly all my years because of this anguish of my soul...surely it was for my benefit that I suffered such anguish."

Hezekiah's pain wasn't wasted.  He saw himself and God in a clearer light and the result was humility and worship.  God has spoken to us too through the Bible, and each one of us can make the same response.  A few chapters later, Isaiah writes:

"For this is what the Lord says--
he who created the heavens, he is God;
he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it;
he did not create it to be empty,
but formed it to be inhabited--
he says,
'I am the Lord, and there is no other.
I have not spoken in secret,
from somewhere in a land of darkness;
I have not said to Jacob's descendants, "Seek me in vain."
I, the Lord, speak the truth;
I declare what is right...
Turn to me and be saved,
all you ends of the earth;
for I am God, and there is no other.'"
Isaiah 45:18,19,22

I don't know everything that God is doing through this pandemic, but bringing people to humble themselves before Him and to entrust their souls to Him is certainly something He is doing.  I pray we will respond to Him accordingly.
Erik and I stayed in Haiti a few weeks longer to get our house ready for our extended absence. We're in the Midwest visiting churches, friends and family, like Sean's parents in Wisconsin.

The Bible School where I teach in Haiti is making use of technology during the Covid confinement.  If you'd like to see me teaching on prophets in the New Testament in Haitian Creole, click on the link and scroll forward to 28:29 to get a sample!

The Haitian government announced that schools will reopen in August, but Covid makes every plan uncertain.

Last Sunday, Heather and I shared stories of our faith journey, our work in Haiti and our plans for the next year. You can watch our presentation here.
Besides celebrating family milestones like Erik's high school graduation, everyone has new experiences ahead:  Ellie starts high school, Joey begins his senior year, Erik starts college and Ian will do 4th year coursework during his third year of college.  All six of us will share a three bedroom, three bath apartment at CIU, which is a blessing to our pocketbook even if we'll be a little squished!  We are so thankful to have this time to be together as our kids enter into adult life.
Heather and I will serve as the Missionaries in Residence at CIU during the upcoming school year.  We will mentor students, supervise a cohort of students doing their practical ministry and Sean will teach two missions courses.

We will remain employed by World Team during our home assignment and Sean will continue his supervisory roles regionally with WT.
Prayer Topics
  • Pray for patience for each other as we transition into these new roles.
  • Pray for my Haitian colleagues as they discern ministry opportunities, use new technology, and manage the school year without me.
  • Pray for the Caribbean Conference--we have to select a new date and probably a new location, but the need for it is as great as ever!  Sean talks with Caribbean church leaders over WhatsApp regularly.
  • Pray for new missionaries to the Caribbean and from the Caribbean to the rest of the world, until Christ returns.
Thanking God for you,

Sean, Heather, Ian, Erik, Joey and Ellie Christensen
