Sacred Heart College International Student Newsletter - Term 1, 2015

6 March 2015

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Agents

Season’s greetings from Auckland and a warm welcome to Sacred Heart College for 2015. We extend a special welcome at the start of the year to 24 new students from China, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Fiji, France and Brazil, and look forward to a very positive academic year. We have been running normal timetable for 6 weeks now and I am very pleased with the way students have settled into the New Year. It is great to see the new students integrating quickly and easily. Well done to them! A big thank you to Mr Cornford and Ms Hooker for their highly efficient style sorting out the timetables for new students.

Our Pillar for 2015 is Support for Individuals and Families in need. Marist education aims to support students and families in need. This includes spiritual, emotional and intellectual supports.

New staff and students are welcomed in a traditional Powhiri welcoming ceremony.

New ELL Teacher

This year we are delighted to welcome Ms Whetuu Nathan to join us and take up the position of ELL teacher. Ms Nathan is thrilled to join in such a dynamic and exciting school, and here is what she has to say

: “Kia ora, my name is Whetuu Nathan and I am new to Sacred Heart College this year and am lucky enough to be working with the fantastic ELL department! I am excited to be teaching at Sacred Heart College and working with the students to improve their speaking, reading and writing of the English language. I have learnt over my years of teaching that every student brings lessons to the class that we can all benefit from. I am learning every day from the ELL students and this makes coming to teach even more rewarding. My previous experience in the classroom showed me that I had to be better for my students and to ensure I was a better teacher I completed a qualification in teaching English as a second language. This has helped me to use strategies to benefit my learners and the levels they are at. Sacred Heart is a special school and I am very happy to be a part of its long and illustrious history. I look forward to working with all the students in the ELL department and assisting them to achieve their academic goals.”

It is staffed by two members of staff each night, who are there to provide supervision and assistance where required. The Study Centre runs in F12  (a computer room) and F13 (a conventional classroom). Students can work in the area that best suits their needs. It is open to all students from Year 7 through to Year 13; International Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this and everyone is welcome.

From the Desk of Mrs Whineray - Homestay & Welfare Coordinator

This term our newly elected ISSC (International Students Social Committee) members HoHin Tsang, Troy Chien, Robin Chiang, TaeHyun Kim and International Prefect Jayden Key have been very busy and started off the year with two great activities.

The first was a fun sports day at school, with the boys playing basketball, football and swimming. This was a great opportunity for all the new students to meet and enjoy some time with other International Students. Our ISSC members organised the shopping and cooking of a delicious BBQ. It was pleasing to see all the boys enjoying themselves, and everyone helping out at the BBQ. The second event was an outing to Mission Bay jointly organised by Epsom Girls Grammar School. The students all contributed to a shared picnic lunch, pizza, sushi, fish and chips and ice creams. They enjoyed the lunch and had fun playing volleyball at our beautiful Mission Bay beach. Plans are already underway for the next International Students activity.

Sounds in the Open Concert  and Twilight Athletics Day

Two important annual events - the Sounds in the Open Concert and Twilight Athletics Day went successfully this year and highlighted the spirits of Sacred Heart College as a Marist Champanat Catholic school.  International boys participated well at both events. It is where the whole school come together to create an atmosphere of team work and for boys to aim high. These pictures record some of the fine moments that the International students had.
